What is a HUMMER collector?

In the interest of not hi-jacking a new guys thread, I thought for awhile about where I was going with this post before submitting.

This guy claims to have three low-mileage H2's, one of which is now for sale, but from the 5 HUMMER forums I checked (no, I didn't go that THAT one, actually finally forgot its web address, but that would make six plus HUMMER forums I'm a member of), this person is a new member to three of the 5, I'm guessing they couldn't find the other two, Canada or X.

My question is how does owning 3 low-mile deuces make them a collector, other than for some reason having 3 massively low mileage deuces with no readily identifiable affiliation in our online HUMMER world? And how does that make them an expert on if I'm a verifiable collector of HUMMER's elite enough to purchase theirs, given I can provide the entry fee into their elite world?

So my question then, is, what makes a HUMMER collector? In my opinion, as a forum member since 2007 or '8 on all of the still active forums supporting 2 and 3 owners, I'm still a rookie compared to guys like 3HUMMER's, who has established most of the known HUMMER forums, and from what I've heard, actually broke into the Indiana assembly plant and slept on the line for a couple of weekend nights on a drunken dare. There are many guys I'd classify as "true" collectors, but may or may not have a small museum quality collection on hand.

Is a HUMMER collector one of the regular joes like many of us who frequent the forum and absorb as much info as possible, attempting to mod and repair our trucks as budget and time allow? Or is a collector someone endowed enough to purchase multiple trucks and keep them clean and low mile, as a few of our members have done. This may include those who love the truck/brand but don't or can't wheel it?

From my experience, many of you "collectors" wheel your trucks, repair them your selves, or are knowledgeable in who does the repairs, and converse with as many other owners as you can to discuss the virtues of owning a unique piece of GM history.

I consider myself an off shoot collector, who prides in not only owning a deuce, and previously a 3, but also as one who collects HUMMER memorabilia. I haven't kept my truck in immaculate condition, but I also don't wheel it as hard as many of you on the forum. Does my odd collection of dealer display items, and some harder to find HUMMER store items make me a "collector"? Am I worthy enough to merit this title? More so--are YOU worthy enough to merit the title?

Bragging about owning a bunch of HUMMER's=not a collector, just a blow hard trying to bring us common folk down=not a collector, but qualified to buy a low mileage duece :wink:

I currently own four Hummers. Have had as many as 5 at one time. I consider myself more of a consumer than a collector. I have a fairly impressive collection of Hummer parts but alas they are really more consumable items than collector pieces.
i would say that I used to be a firearms collector until that horrible boat mishap when all were lost. I took the insurance proceeds from the boat accident and invested in a collection of Franklin Mint Elvis plates. I have the entire collection complete with plates depicting baby Elvis all the way through bloated Elvis. I hear one day they will make me rich. Does that give me my bonafides as a collector....I just don't know.

Dave, you seriously have the entire FM Elvis plate collection? Oh man, where did you find the really rare "Split Pants Karate Kick" plate? Is yours the "Goin Commando" version. If it is, you could retire if you sold just that one plate!

I think I straddle the line of enthusiast and collector. I've kept my truck as clean and low mileage as I can (still under 34k miles) but I've also wheeled it and enjoyed it.

I've got loads of Hummer literature and trinkets, a blog dedicated to my truck, even had an H2 act as my wedding transportation. Hummer has been a huge part of my life.

I think almost everyone here is in the same boat...we are all driving and enjoying vehicles from a defunct brand that are at least 5 or more years old. I think that says something about not only this forum, but the Hummer brand.

When you give instructions to your wife where to go on line to sell your hummers when you die ----- you are a collector

If you own it and never use it in order to keep it in like new condition -- you are an investor

When you plan to actively use these for their intended purpose for a long time -- you are an enthusiast and the best offroading partner anyone can have - for years to come

I like "hoarder" the best. You are a collector if it's stuffed in a garage somewhere never seeing sunlight. Hoarders have tons of parts they bought "just in case", a pile of HUMMER toys, and other crap they just couldn't resist. And hoarders have at least one story about that time it took them hours to dig their truck out of the woods.

The reason I'm standing in front of this truck is that my Utah dealer Jerry Seiner has a free loaner program when my deuce went in for service; I dropped the deuce off the day before to have some warranty (trail damage) work done and it coincided with my planned road trip to pick up these signs just outside of San Fran. After sending the pics to my service manager he recommended that I not show them off to other members of the dealership and using the truck for this run........

Dude! Twin, 28's are out of date. You can easily run 32's with rubber bands. I've seen it, in tha hood

I love Corvettes, and utterly hate the collectors - you know, the guys who own a 1980, 305 powered California Corvette and is looking for genuine GM vacuum hoses to replace the rotted ones on his motor.... or even better, looking for new, date/casting correct heads for the aforementioned 305.

All you can ask a collector is "why?" but honestly, I've yet to hear a good answer from any of them

to the case-in-point, there are a lot of 60k-70k cars out there that should appreciate over the next 100 or so years - I honestly don't see a point where any Hummer will actually come up in value to a point that not putting the same money into a savings account wouldn't actually net him more money

2006 H1Alpha. New list approximately $145K wagon, 135K open top. Current selling price for trucks with under 5K miles approximately 220K. That is a lot better return than any savings account I have seen in the last 8 years. Granted there aren't many under 5K trucks out there but I know of seven that have changed hands, all in excess of 200K and one at 240K.

If I'm shelling out top dollar for a rig I'd want all OEM equipment. As for something like GM vaccum hoses... I can understand. I keep looking for delco/gm/etc fuel return lines for my H1. Why? 90% of what's being sold now is made is generics that come apart after a few weeks costing me a diesel leak. Never again.

What keeps the 100% oem original things going is it shows the guy who owns the vehicle or has restored it has cared enough to keep it that way instead of working for a quick flip.

Like I got a good example of small details missed leading to bigger warning signs....

There's a place that sells used H1's, they take it a dealer to get their trucks looked at generally. Not to get worked on but to get an inspection, then they get their own guys to work on it.

I've seen this twice with 2 different places.

One case they used all the wrong screws to re install the H1 interior, plus had all the tie rods/radius arms flipped around so they would cut into the rim and tire upon full compression.

The other case the guys had a really nice [at first sight] late model H1... problem was they cheaped out. First thing I noticed was the ****ed up paint and wear at the A-pillar when you lifted the hood up.. why? I guess the place was willing to shell out money to get misc mechanical work done, but wound't spend $20 to replace the missing hood snubs. Now the truck needs an expensive touch up job there which could have been easily avoided.

So yeah you have a case where someone would pay $1000 to rebuild a transfer case but won't spend $20 on a rubber block or save $10 by getting import generic hoses... yeah no way In hell I'd buy a truck from that guy unless its so cheap to warrant dealing with the repairs down the road.
