St. Helens Sept 11th

Glad I came and took a look at this today...


The trip is still on for this Sunday the 11th, We will be meeting at the Woodland AmPm AT 9AM and leaving shortly after. We are going to have a pretty full day of driving and sight seeing. We will depart AmPm at 9:30 the latest so we can hit the road. We will head up 503 to the turn for Ape Caves and heading to the end of the road to walk the loop around Lava Canyon. From there we will try to make it to the Lower Falls on the Lewis river. Out goal is to get to the fire lookout on Burley Mtn. Burley Mtn lookout will require several miles of dirt road, it is going to be dry and dusty. The roads here are not gravel till we get to the other side. We will then leave the lookout and head back down toward the Cispus Learning Center and head out to Randle. Depending on the time we can grab dinner at the reastaurant in Randle. This will be an all day event so bring food and anything else for lunch and drink. We will stop in Cougar for gas before heading up the hill. We will be away from anything offering fuel or services till we reach Randle that night. Please post here will who is going. I'd like to get confirmation of all Saturday before we leave.

I'm planning on attendingwith my stock '08 H2. I have not bought any offroad/excursion gear for the H2 yet (jerry cans, high lift jack etc.) - hopefully gas won't be an issue.

As for the fuel issue it shouldn't be a problem. We will be getting gas in Cougar before we head farther up. In Woodland there is a Chevron across the street from AmPm to get gas. I had chosen AmPm to meet due to more space to gather.

A stock rig will be fine for this trip as well. Any offroad is just going to be dirt and gravel inumproved roads.

I should be able to make this run. There are some nice views up the road from ape caves. I have hunted there the last few years.

I'm ready and excited! This should be lots of fun, and we have some fantastic weather here right now... I'm in heaven! Since I haven't seen the attendee list posted yet, here goes. Looks like we have a nice sized group-- so far 4 H3's and an H2. Sweet!

I just did a quick overview of the trip. Looks like if we went to Lava Canyon and Lower Falls on the Lewis River and then to Marble Mountain that we would be doing 128 miles total from Cougar to Randle with a time frame of five hours... When we meet in the morning I think we will discuss this trip and see what eveyones thoughts are on the trip. Marble Mountain is the definite hot spot to reach. We can talk it over and see about going to Lava Canyon and Lower Falls. I'd like to try and make this enjoyable, with the heat and being pressed for time with a bunch of hiking and extra driving might be a bit much. We will play it by ear in the morning. I am excited to do this trip and getting out on some dirt.


If we skip Lava Canyon this will take away 30 miles round trip and a roughly 1 mile hike loop hike.

If we skip Lower Falls, this will take away another 30 miles round trip also.

Both of these side trips will average 20 mph so we must take that into consideration.

Dang it that's too bad! :roll: Wish you were coming, but that's the way it goes sometimes. It should be a fantastic sunny day today on the mountain. Oh well, see you at Naches and we'll do those funny rocks!

We all had an outstanding day on the mountain today! I just made it home safely a little while ago and got a bite to eat. I'm dusty and a bit tired but I feel so happy and satisfied. I'll post up my pics as soon as I can get 'em sorted out.

Thanks for the great pics, guys! I had an awesome day on the mountain riding with my HUMMER pals! We couldn't have had better weather. PNW-H3 did a great job showing all of us around so I know he will give the blow-by-blow details of our adventure. The big highlight points of interest were Lower Falls on Lewis River, and Burley Mountain Lookout Point. Here are my pics from the day:

The Lower Falls! Outstanding! The sound that this rushing water made was so breathtaking! These pics don't do the size of this fall justice. Very steep dropoff...

We walked down to the a spot near the bottom and played around. The water was freezing!

Making our way up Burley Mountain to the lookout cabin.

Burley Mountain Fire Lookout. Elevation: 5,304 ft. This is a really cool place. You feel on top of the world up here. You can see the 4 Big from here: Rainier, Hood, St. Helens and Adams. And all the smaller ones in between. There are fires burning in the Olympics and Cascades, so it was hazy and not as clear as it would ordinarily be. But we still could see the peaks.

This is a really neat place!
