2000 H1 Tailpipe smokes bad upon starting...?

Hope all is well, and someone can offer some advice. I have a 2000 H1 wagon, 6.5 Turbo diesel. When its cold, it smokes out the tailpipe horribly bad, and it coughs a bit. After
a few minutes, it's perfectly fine, stops instantly and drives great. My mechanic cannot figure it out. We changed out quite a few parts, including the fuel injection pump. No dice.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Ken

What is your engine code? 2000 still had some of the blocks with the bad #8 cylinder casting. Has your mechanic done a compression test? If the exhaust smells like diesel the issue is usually the glow plugs, injectors, IP or compression issues. If it smells sweet you are likely burning coolant and are having a bad day. My 98 H1 lasted almost 90,000 miles with the #8 cylinder issue. Most blew up within 30,000 miles and AMG replaced a lot of them under warranty. In 2000 they started using a new "heavy" block that did not have the same issue. Serial # or engine code would tell if you had one of the newer blocks.
