Well the voices (both those inside and outside of my head) have spoken and have requested we repeat in Hurricane, UT in 2024. We saw some great trails this year and we'll find even more next year.

Dates: Sunday, March 31, 2024 to Friday, April 5, 2024
Typically the last day of wheeling is Friday, with the last people departing on Saturday.
Park trails and overview: https://caltopo.com/m/63T1, https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/sand-hollow/, https://www.winter4x4jamboree.com/Trails-Home.cfm
More trail info: https://winter4x4jamboree.com/Trails-Home.cfm

The Outpost is the same next year as I already made my AirBnB reservation: https://www.google.com/maps/@37.1354142,-113.3722021,15.29z?hl=en

GMRS will be again the radio standard. We will start on Channel 17 and see how that works for us

Tentative Schedule

  • Sunday: TBD
  • Monday: Tocquerville Falls (2 rating) and Rattlesnake Gulch (6 rating). No flag required.
  • Tuesday: TBD
  • Wednesday: TBD. Catered dinner at the Outpost at 6:30 pm
  • Thursday: Open
  • Friday: TBD
Days in the park requires a $20 fee and the use of a dune safety flag. For trail ratings in the park, we will be focusing on 4s and 5s for stock H3s. 6s start to get tough (straps may be needed), 7s get rough.

Area GPS files

Fees, please: TBD. No more than last year and likely less, just to offset costs.

Attendee List

Best guess and confirmed is below. I will start cleaning up as we get confirmations.

I’m planning to be there. In the middle of swapping out my tcase right now. Apparently there were issues with it. Hopefully that solves some of the issues I’ve been having.

We'll have to see if we can get lost less this next time!
Hope so! I've been reading up on GPS and it seems that phones and Garmins use the same sensors, so one is not fundamentally more accurate than the other. The problem this year was we could not get a good reading on our exact location. We'd be on the trail, and then it would jump off 100 yards or so. Maybe Garmins have better antennas or are more resistant to ground interference - that's my hope, but I can't find any good info on it suggesting that it's not the case.

Garmins have the advantage that you can see them in bright sunlight, and phones you can't. But a large screen Garmin is $1200, so that's a wee bit of an issue. The small screen one I used this year is tough to get a good picture of the area without zooming out and losing the detail that you need to truly figure out where you are, and where you need to head.

OnXoffroad was a huge plus for navigation this year, but again if the phone can't locate us then it's of no benefit.

We are in. This was a fun trip. Loved Rattlesnake Gulch. Hopefully I can find a campsite in the same area next year.

After returning the ZR2 got a fresh set of KM3's installed and I just added the Garmin Tread overland 8" GPS. Already have birds eye view downloaded to the unit for Utah and Colorado.

I want to go, but it is highly reliant on me being able to get my daughter's new car (2005 Beetle 1.8T convertible) put back together and on the road, and then being able to put my H3 down for a lot of heavy maintenance. If I can get that done before winter hits I'll be good to go. Otherwise with how much damage my H3 has accumulated over the last few trips I don't think I want to put it through another trip before repairing it.

I'm really hoping I haven't bent the frame, but it's highly probable. No AC sucks, water is getting into the back somewhere still, front tires are worn badly due to terrible alignment, several crinkled body panels on the front to fix, still haven't replaced the broken driver side mirror (though the glue and tape are still holding up quite well to be honest), etc.

I want to put it down for a while so that I can tear half of it apart and fix all these problems in one long go.

After a few years off (10???? It's been a WHILE!!!!) I'd like to say I'm tentative for 2024. I've got both a girlie-rig (2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk) and the lifted H3. Would be a first for my wife (yeah that's new too since I've been on here).

Ok it's doubtful, Hurricane is a long ass drive, but it's in the realm of possibility and I'd like to. Let's see!

Don, Reaper, nice to hear from you each. Hurricane is a bit of a hike for many, part of the reason we didn't see a few regulars last year.

Took the Alpha in for an alignment, got word the ball joints in the control arms are bad. Not sure how they went out so quickly though, but now I get to add that to my list of things I need to try and fix before winter hits.

OMG my life kinda rebooted since I last saw you Alrock (And everyone!!!). Went through a wonderdful divorce, that was fun.... and got married back in 2020. Just kinda getting back into off-roading a bit, and wanted to get to Moab and thought I'd check what our Rockies crew is up to. I also bought a Jeep Gladiator today, but still got the H3 (maybe not for too much longer, but my son loves it). But the Gladiator will probably up my chances of making those long trips, I was having some reliability issues with the H3.
