33" A/T Tire Recommendations

I'm currently running an aggressive 35" M/T tire, but my time on-road is increasing and the M/T is getting annoying. I'd like to step down to a 33" A/T tire to try and recoup a little fuel economy, but mostly for ride comfort (i.e. not vibrating on the highway) and lower noise.

What do you run in a 33" tire? Is it noisy? Is the ride comfortable? How is the wear?

I would suggest something like the stock adventure package Bridgestone Dueler RH-S or even the BFGoodrich T/A KO. Another option if you still do quite a bit of wheeling is something a little more aggressive like the Cooper Discoverer S/T. I had Cooper Discoverer S/T in a 285/75R16 for a short time before I switched to the 305/70R16 Nokian Vatiiva M/T's and loved them. Are there any limitations in tire brands available in your part of Canada?

I think we should all look at tires from American companies, like the Coopers mentioned above (ST), the STT for a bit more aggresive, the Mickey Thompson MTZs, and the Mickey Thompson ATZ, all in 305 size tires (basically an inch wider than the 285s). I run 305 MTZs and go where the 315 tires go, but I will seriously look at the Mickey Thompson ATZ for a bit more of an on road tire when I need another set.

I sure do love the MTZs!; (Mirrored pic)

I ran the Bridgestone Dueller Revos for a few years. They did great in the city and on dry dirt but sucked in mud or slightly wet dirt. Never tore a sidewall on the rocks.

Goodyear MT/R's with Kevlar are somewhat between an AT and MT tire IMO, and would be a good choice. I ran the Dick Cepek FC-II's which are also an AT/MT hybrid and they worked well both on the street and off road.

Alot of people will snub them, but I've been running Nitto Terragrapplers and love them. In the Texas Gulf Coast, all we have is sand or mud. My neighbor has 2 Jeep Wrangler 4 doors and swears by the Goodyear Duratracks. He has a lot of disposable income so he has gone through a few tires and likes them the most. A majority of his wheeling is done in West Texas during deer season.

I use the BFG TA/KO's and have have been quite pleased. I've used them for many years on almost all my trucks. I have the "E" load range ones on now, they are tough as hell and wear is excellent. Sadly, I beileve that they have stopped making the "E" load range :(

I can't believe there's only been 1 endorsement of the Goodyear DuraTracs. They are a great all around tire and even though they look like an M/T, they are an A/T and are highly rated for all terrain except mud. They do ok in the mud, but not great. They are very quiet on the road and my 35's are wearing great so far.

I've done well with my Bridgestone Dueler revo's. But IMO on the new revo 2, the rubber compound is a little soft.

I really like the Goodyear DuraTrac's. I was considering the Kevlar MTR's and then we had snow with some ice and even the dealer said the MTRs are not that great in the snow. They are wearing very well; quiet on the road and great grip off-road. I was concerned with the sidewalls, but they have performed very well this summer in the Colorado Rockies.

I have had several sets of BFG AT and they load up easily with wet snow and the rubber compound is a bit hard. It kind of chunks a bit in rocks. I like the three-ply sidewall.

I guess it all boils down to your off-road situation; rocks, dry, wet, sandy etc...

EDIT: Looking back on the OP, I would say that NS gets some ice in the winter? In that case, I would not recommend BFG AT's. IMHO, the compound is too hard. Best for NS and Canadian winters would be Bridgestone Bizzak's. I run those in the winter and the Hummer is pretty much unstoppable. The Blizzak is the best on ice. IMHO, studs don't start working until the tire is spinning and sliding for the studs to cut into the ice. Yes the Blizzak has a very soft compound so it will wear faster than an all-season tire.

I would run the 35's in the summer and 33" (265 or 285's) Blizzak's in the winter. Several options on tread; pick waht is right for your driving.

If you want a winter rated AT tire, the Goodyear DuraTrac is going to be the best option (IMHO). The sipping in the tread will help in the wet/ice roads. Not as good as a Blizzak, but much more long term with the wear.

I agree the BFG A/Ts are a harder compound, thus their long life. I had a lot of chunking on rocks and after about 1/3 wear they were not good on the Moab slickrock.

Sounds like the DuraTrac's are popular for an all-season A/T - we get quite a bit of ice/snow/slush here in NS.

Has anyone had experience with the Kumho Road Venture AT KL78? A local shop recommended those to me over the BFG A/T (which is what I was originally looking at).

I would say the stock Duelers were great and when I dumped my 06 at around 36K, they were not even half worn. And for about the first 15K miles on the 08, they were great too. They were very good on snow, and normal highway driving, and I honestly think they were actually better on slick rock than the STTs or my new Dunlop Fierce Attitude tires.

As for where they are made, I believe in IL, but Bridgstone has four plants in the USA Des Moines,IA, Bloomington,IL, Lavergne, TN, Morrison, TN. Only way to tell if a particular tire is made in the USA is to look at that particular tire since a few tire models might be made in two different plants. Years ago, I got Goodyear tires for my Vette and they were molded made in Germany, and a few months later got a set of Yokohamas which were molded with Made in the USA. Go figure....

I run 33" (285x75x16) Duratracs. Load range E. 3 ply sidewalls. 16mpg at 75mph with the air on. I run 45 psi on road and 20 psi off raod. Nice quiet tire on road with aggressive appearance. Large lug voids on the edges. Rim guard design. If I were to spend a lot of time in sand then I would opt for the 305x70x16 - 33's. They are excellant in snow. Good in water, mud, rock, tree roots.

My slate blue and the white H3 are both running 33" duratracs in the below photos.
