It is impossible to overstate the importance of fire, it has many uses:
- Cooking
- Purifying Water
- Signaling
- Warmth
- Sterilizing Equipment / Tools
- Repelling Insects
- Security (animals)
- Light
- Hardening Wood / Tools
- Preserving meat
- Creating Char
There are many devices that can be used to create fire and I recommend carrying at least three of them in your bugout / emergency bag.
My primary device is a Firesteel / Ferrocerium Rod. These metal rods are small and, with practice, can start thousands of fires. They even work when wet. You'll need a striker, the back side of a carbon steel knife, or file (multi-tool) to use them. They do take a little practice to get the technique down, but when you do, you carry a lot of use in a small package.

As backup devices, I carry at least one lighter (first choice in favorable conditions because of ease of use), and a lens (magnified sunlight). I've also practiced with flint and steel, batteries, a solar spark and a few other items. You can also train to use some primitive techniques, like bow drills, hand drills and fire plows, but they take time and practice.
