Time to throw the swag in the back and point the Defender west for some red dirt work. Wendy couldn’t come on this trip so forget the lettuce and fruit and there is room for a few extra XXXX beer cans in the fridge for this blokes trips.

Charles Kingsford Smith landed here in 1919 and not much has changed since then.

Plenty of top camping spots like this along the banks of the Langlo River

The Adavale Pub is an oasis in a dry outback. Gotta love the rain water tank painted like a XXXX Can.

Inside the pub has a great character with the horns from a local legend mounted behind the bar

Across the road there is a little historical hut with a heap of memorabilia depicting the history of the area.

But it was time to move on and find somewhere to roll out the swag for the night. This looks OK..and the chance to catch tea as well.

Sunset came..

One thing that is needed in spades in the bush is flexibility and as some one had obvious net fished the waterhole just before my arrival, fish was off the menu and time for an improvised man meal….potato chip sandwich and beer.

A new day and a new menu. Often on bloke’s trips, it is easy to eat poorly but I decided it was important to maintain healthy meals. Happy face pancakes with fruit pieces fitted the bill perfectly. A packet of Allen’s candies meant there was no need to peel fruit as there were, banana’s straight from the packet to use for eyebrows and the mouth, Ripe Raspberries for eyes and Mandarins for the nose…how healthy is that…

A quick flip

And it is tucker time…how good is this..you don’t get meals for this at the Hilton.

Can not sit around living high on the hog all day, it’s time to hit the frog and toad….. that would be road for those not familiar with Aussie English..

Ran into a few mates along the way…

Final stop is the Black Stump in Blackall. Blackall is famous for “The Back Stump” which originated in 1887 when the Surveyor General used the stump as a large flat area to set theodolites on, for obtaining longitude and latitude bearings which formed the basis for sighting town from Brisbane to Boulia such as Roma, Charleville and Blackall. At the time, country west of the stump was considered so remote that it was referred to as “Beyond the Black Stump”. Sadly the original stump was burnt and has been replaced by a petrified wood version.

Damn, I love this country.

I remember fishing the bush creeks as a kid......... 2 nets, AvGas or Detonators into the middle, very effective but not very environmentally friendly thinking about it now.

Thanks for the trip report Nugget, always love seeing your photos and reading your stories.

Maybe one day I'll be able to do something similar.

Nerd question: When you are out and about like this, what do you do for communications if anything? Sat phone? Radios?
