It looks like some hackers tried to get in today via Cometchat, the chat bar at the bottom of the forum pages. There are a lot of known exploits out there (thanks for the info, cbetts) so we can minimize the hacking if we upgrade to the latest version.

I'm trying to figure out if it is worth spending the $50 to upgrade to Cometchat 5 - are people using this feature?

Or, we can keep it simple: if a member wants to sponsor the upgrade, I'll send out an H4O shirt and baseball cap in return.

I cannot remember the last time I used "Cometchat" and even then, it was only to send you, Luisa or RuggedH2 a well crafted insult.

:giggle:

"ChatBox" however, continues to be a useful feature and will be unaffected by the removal of Cometchat.....Correct?

Haven't used it in awhile. Adrian used to send me messages with it when he was stalking me. Now, he just texts me. Can you get rid of that too? :giggle:

I like to use it when it is working properly. It is fun to have a quick live chat with someone else on the forum. Downsides, more often than not, no one else is on when I am. Also, Scarsman continues to have issues with it signing him out or just not working.

Time to let it go.

They were never "well crafted"... mostly they were lame and stupid.

It's okay... the important thing is that you tried.

Well, the decision sorta got made for us - keep! Cometchat saw these posts (presumably with Google Alerts) and offered us a free upgrade to the current version so that we'd continue using their product. It's a great addin for our site and allows quick and easy private conversations.

If you're not logged in you shouldn't see Cometchat, which should reduce the hacking attempts. Hopefully any login issues are addressed as well with this version.

Many thanks to Cometchat for this great, unsolicited customer service.

I was of the "get rid of it" opinion until I saw this post. We can't have serious vulnerabilities on our forum. I'm glad the vendor stepped up and did the right thing, props to them.
