Door Lock Knobs?

I have a simple yet perplexing problem for you all.
The driverside door lock knob (you know the black pull up knob on the door top) is broken. This is the older version that looks like an hour glass and the top snapped off. I bought a couple of those and I want to replace them. The broken knob was on real tight and I tried to unscrew it off but all it does is turn real hard. I thought the rod was spinning but its not. I can spend all day twisting it and it will not come off. I even pull upwards while spinning with zero luck. It stays at the same spot.
This sounds like it would be a no brainer. Does anyone know whay this is happening? Any thoughts on how to get that off?

try to turn it the other way, to the right. it sounds stupid but some of them had reverse threads on them, they are also a forced fit, if you look at the new ones there aren't any threads in the pin, it threads them as you screw it on which is why some of them suck trying to get them off.

One thing I don't like about the newer pull knobs, is they are cut at a different length [longer] than my old ones on my 1998. And as Mike stated, unthreaded.

Because it's longer they stick out much higher, and the internal void doesn't progress all the way up the rod, so its only so far you can screw the thing in and you are left with a 3"+ high lock pull :)

I guess you can drill it out, I was told from another source that some fords from the late 80's and early 90s have a similar pull knob style so I'll check those out, i've seen a few mustang restoration places sell billet versions in raw steel, and black .
