Hi gang,

I recently replaced my front wheel bearing hub assemblies, as they were past due. Once they were finally quiet, I realized that I can now hear the driveshaft cv complaining so I'll be changing that next.

My questions for you are if you have recommendations for parts, and if you have tips/ suggestions for any other part replacements while I'm down there.

Thanks! I appreciate the help.

Dorman makes a replacement CV for the driveshaft. My experience so far is that it's not as well built as the OEM CV but the only way to get the OEM CV is to purchase the entire propshaft. I put a Dorman CV in last month.

While you're there, check the crossmember under the rear of the front diff and check for up/down play. That bushing does wear out. The side ones wear out to, especially the passenger one, but not as frequently.

You can also get a full OEM driveshaft from Rock Auto for not much more than the CV itself. Then it replaces the CV and the U joint. I feel the CV alone is fine for a trail spare but if you have the downtime at home just replace the whole thing.

Though I just checked Rock auto and they have other brands of CVs for about $50. The OEM driveshaft is $270. Last I checked the Cardone CV was $100.

But really if you want it to last, go with OEM unless doing more than average trail driving. I think the real killer of the OEM CV is if the boot tears and the lube leaks out. Since it's not changing angle at all and it's a pretty shallow angle it can last quite a while.

The OD shaft is a good upgrade, Tom's Driveshafts makes one as well.

What do you do with your H3? Daily driver with a few trails? Stock replacement is great. Looking to abuse it and have a worry free front drive shaft? OD is the way to go. Either way, people have had success with both.

Thanks, it's the daily for about 4 months of the year in the winter, and the fun wagon for camping/ shooting/ off-roading whenever else. I don't do much more than deactivated roads in her, so it's not a heavy use situation. I was considering the upgrade if it was just that much tougher/more durable than stock. I've always liked improving things when I'm doing repairs, y'know?
