Hey All,
I getting ready to pick up a 97 H1 Wagon and I talked to my auto insurer. They gave me a ball park number of $3000/Year! :gaah:They said becasue of the weight (around 10,000) that it was classed as a commercial truck. I have a 2006 H2 and a 2006 Taco together is only $1750/Year! The $3000 for one H1 is almost double of the two other vehicles. What the hell! This is through Progressive. Is there another insurer that you might suggest?

I don't know why I'm surprised about the cost to insure this. I can see now why not too many people own one.
There needs to be some kind of loopole in all of this. Yeah, its heavier. So what? I've never had to buy commercial insurance. I'm not a commecial driver hauling lead bricks.
I'm looking around to see if there is something that can be done about that. I'll let you all know what I find out.
I guess I should just shut up and take it like a man. :whaa:

The liability insurance is heavily (no pun intended) influenced by the weight of the vehicle because a 10,000 lbs vehicle can do a lot more damage than a 2,000 lb subcompact.

That being said I would get an independent insurance agent to get quotes from many insurance companies and see if one comes out better.

With so few made (under 12,000) and prices that were above $100k for new trucks it is also sometimes considered an exotic.

Shop around, I found the best rates in my case was with AAA of California.

I have my 1998 insured for around $1400 a year, it was $1250 /yr with the minimums, but I increased coverages across the board, my rate went up 50$/year when I moved to burbank.

When I called around for quotes it was $1250-2500. I had better luck going and getting quotes in person.

The largest factor on my statement was comprehensive coverage at $800 a year [I guess AAA had a few H1 incidents to repair :giggle:] the rest was less than that (Uninsured, Medical, liability, property]

If I went liability only I could probably get it down to 400-500$ a year but that's stupid.

As a side note, after seeing what one H1 owner did at a gas station during a run a few years back, I'd up any property damage coverage you have to $250,000+.

I pay between $800-$900/ H1 per year for insurance through USAA. I have high limits across the board.. Shop around, that price is nuts. A 1997 wagon only weighs about 6500#. the GVWR is 10,300#.

State farm quoted me at ~$600 for 6 months for a '94 Wagon, don't have it yet but that does sound good.

USAA's quote was also outrageous, as most other places was.

I have been with USAA 34 years and have price checked them numerous times, they have always been very competitive if not the cheapest.

I can tell you that if you were in Utah a 1997 would cost you 750 a year with 250 500 250 coverage and 100 500 deductible, but a little bit that goes on with insurance companies, rates consist of 1 driving record, 2 credit, 3 the vehicle itself and how much damage it would cause in the event of an accident. I insure 2 alphas right now and they cost my clients about 90 a month with the same coverages quoted above.

a 97 wagon weighs 10K or better? I'd kick that agent in the nuts and teach them how to Google. First number I found lists the wagon at approx. 7100 pounds. Guess what Wikipedia lists the deuce at? 6600 pounds, so should I pay thru the ass for my insurance too?
Time to lose the lizard or break up with Flo or whoever is trying to screw you and find a new agent......
Just sayin'

THat is great advice Twinmill, an agent is good to have im not just saying because I am one but we are an advocate for our clients if we are doing our job correctly, I know some companies like usaa are pretty good non agent specific companies but geico can suck it as well as progressive in my opinion, you just never know how stripped down their policies are.
I definitely would say go to an agents office sit down and have them run quotes for you either a captive agent or an independent.

funny how people have the impression that the h1 is so big. Here's a picture I snapped at a toy drive a few years ago:
