Half shaft replacement brand

It is time for me to replace my half shafts again. After breaking one on a trail and putting on my spare, I need to replace both. In the past I have purchased the EMPI shafts mainly due to price. I have only broken one shaft, the others I have had to replace due to damage to the boots.

What is everyone's experience with halfshafts? Any brands out there that people really like? :corn:

OEM for me for as long as I can find them. I've been stockpiling these!

I think OEM is the way to go, if you're good with the price. 2nd, I would put the Cardone Selects ($40 on Rockauto.com). I did just break one on the trail - snapping the shaft, not the CV - but that was driver error. As for EMPI, Reloader snapped a shaft on the trail and that was not driver error, it was a manufacturer issue. I had two straight quality control issues on my Audi halfshafts by EMPI.

I'm sticking with Cardone for now. I'm stockpiling them :) (Make sure you get new ones, not remans.)

I have cardone spares. Haven't had to put one in yet. 06 H3 is running them as well. The only issue he has had with them is a torn boot, but that was more than likely from a rock and not quality.

What is the best price you have found on oem? I am finding a $200 price difference between oem and other manufacturers.

I would say that my snapped shaft was driver error as well. My biggest issues with EMPI have been boot issues.

OEM are around $280 new. I paid an average of $75 for mine but that was a while back.

Brodie sold them pretty cheap back in the day when he had a good source at GM. Unfortunately, those days are now distant memories.

I'm running a set of Cardone (new CV's) on my Alpha and I'm very happy with them. I think as long as all of your Diff bushings are in good shape, and the actual axle doesn't flex you'll be fine with aftermarket CV's.

not to hijack the thread, but can you just disconnect the upper control arm and replace it that way or do you have to take everything off?

Yes, you can just disconnect the upper control arm. Axle replacement process: remove axle nut, remove wheel, remove tie rod end from knuckle, remove lower shock bolt, remove UCA pinch bolt. Pull out axle.
