how big is to big

Hey guys. I'm not much of a poster and more of a reader here but looking for some guidance. I'm thinking of trading my h3 in on an h2...the only vehicle that could take me away from the 3. The h2 that I'm looking at has 325/50/22 nitto mts. That's right, big ole rims but at least they put a good tire on it. I know 17's seem to be the sweet spot for rim size on a 35 tire but how bad would it really be to offroad with these tires and rims. It seems about 2.5in difference in sidewall so would you just air down half what you would do with a 17 and just suffer less traction...would the added height in ground clearance make up for the lack of traction kinda of a trade off deal. Let me know what you think. I know at least for he road they would handle a little better but would be a little rougher. I'm not a big rim guy but surprisingly these did not look as bad as I thought they would. I'm not sure if I should dump the setup right away if I buy the truck or let them ride til thy were out as they are in pretty decent shape. Thanks for any help guys.

I would say it depends on what kind of off roading you intend to do. Short sidewalls mean the tires won't flex and wrap around obstacles when aired down as well. It also means your expensive wheels are a lot closer to the rocks and more vulnerable to damage. But if you don't plan on doing much hard wheeling in the rocks and deep ruts, and you like the look and ride on road, then roll with them!

thanks scarsman. Yeah I'm not in love with them but at least they were not as bad as I thought they would be. I'm not a harcore rock crawler, more of an overlander but I know I would probably eventually go to 17s for the reasons you suggest. Just didn't know if they would be okay to run out the set and then do the switch instead of right now cus it would proly be about 2500. That puts a damper in upgrading steering and susp and other odds and ends.

I know that I really notice a difference in the wheels staying out of danger between my 37"s on 17"s on the H2 and 31"s on 15"s on my XJ.

thank you for your insight, your knowledge is greatly appreciated. The smart thing seems to be to either change out right away or keep searching diff rigs. I think emotion of gettn an h2 was trying to get me to settle Thanks for your time.

Aside from not doing as well offroad, I think it would make for a harsh uncomfortable ride. More often than not when I air down it's more about softening the ride for comfort than the extra bit of traction.

If this H2 is at a dealership you might be able to work out something. If they have another H2 on the lot, get them to trade the wheels/tires. If not, try to work a new set of wheels/tires into the deal. Worst comes to worst, just buy a new set and sell off the 22s.

Thanks septic. Yeah I'm gonna see what they would b willing to do. Those tires r the only thing that I wasn't really happy bout with that truck. Like I said with scars....I think I was leten in emotion take over & tryin to justify those tires & rims would b good enough. Thank you guys for grounding me.

Maybe this will put your mind at ease a bit. Don't get too hung up on the wheels. Sure, you are going to want to swap them out, but on the other hand it's a pretty good indication that H2 hasn't been abused offroad. If it's exactly what you are looking for otherwise, just calculate new wheels/tires into the price and decide if it's worth it. You might even find a set of inexpensive stock wheels with usable tires from someone who bought an aftermarket set. Who knows, you could get really lucky and be able to sell those 22s for more than what it costs you to pick up a set of 17s.

Yeah it's at my local dealer & I know the owner very well. He knows the only reason I would get rid of my 3 would be for a 2 so when he got the 2 in, he had me take it home for a night. So hopefully we can get something worked out otherwise I will just keep my slow 2 search going.

This is brilliant Jack! If the day ever comes to sell the deuce I'll put a set of 22's on it and nobody will ever know the trails I've run with it or how many times I almost rolled it!

I do see how the wheels can be a hanging point if you want to run trails. I love my deuces factory wheels on 37's for pounding through the desert around here, not sure how much stiffer the ride would be on those wheels but it can't be good. If the dealer really is a good friend, you should be able to get him to work a deal in swapping those out for something, anything, else or putting a good set of new wheels/tires on and roll his price into your sales price.

Ditch the 22's! Can't imagine wheeling on those. Another member here had a serious flop in Moab, and I think we was running 20's, how he bought the truck. I'm running factory wheels with 37's, and no issues

I have had no issues when rolling my 22's off road, so I disagree about them not being useful, same goes for the ride, except when hitting big potholes when driving, the ride is pretty smooth. I know I could use better shocks to take the harder impacts though.

Thanks guys. Well talked again today & sounds like they will find a set of black 17s & put a factory size Mt tires on at no charge. 37s would of been sweet but for free the 35s will do for now & I can have money for other upgrades. Thanks again for helping me not settle & let my emotions get the best of me. Might even leave a piece of chrome on for twin in appreciation :)

Yeah, 35's are ok, but if you're like me, every time you look at the truck it will look kind of weird until you put the 37's on and realize that's the way it should have been out of the factory.

I stuff the 37's pretty regularly when bouncing through the desert, but until something breaks, I'll just listen to the sound of rubber banging wheel wells---yeah, sounds kind of dirty like a porno when I say it that way.......

I guess size matters to my wife as she prefers the 2 vs the 3....guess I'm screwed. But anyways back to the truck, they have a few things to take care of but gonna make the leap. All around the 2 will fit our life style better than the 3. Thank you all again for the help & good laughs.

Thanks guys. Once they change out some things for me it is time to start a new build. It will be a lil slow going as I am also in the process of building a offroad teardrop and other wife projects but I'm super excited
