I have some rust spots on the H1 body. One day I'll need to fix them right. For now, I need a way to stop it from rusting.
Do any of you know a way or a chemical that will stop the rust from going any further?
Then.... How do you find the paint color number and where to buy touchup and small spray paint? It's a 97 wagon. Fly Yellow? How the hell did they come up with "FLY" Yellow?

Look up fly yellow on Hummer parts guy or you can call Dave at Bluehummer to order it for you. Check out the vendors on the HML to find it.

Thanks Hummer Investment Inc.!! Good Stuff!
I have no idea why AMG came up with "FLY" Yellow. I mean, there is no fly that I know of thats yellow or flying being yellow. Beats me.
TNX AGN for the info!

Is there anything I can put on the bad rust to keep it from rusting further? Is there a primer that will stop rusting? I just need something to stop it until I can fix it. The worst rust is between the top and bottom body. I hear that's a common thing.

For the rust, I would use a rust converter. I have used some stuff called "One Step" in the past with very good results. It chemically changes the rust and stops it, and becomes a primer coat. You just need to clean off any loose rust first. Then you can paint over it. There are other brands out there, and they are all the same chemical. I would use a brush on rather than spray on. Seems to soak in better.

One option for paint, if you have any body shop supply stores near you, you can give them the paint code and they can mix up a small batch and put it in an aerosol can for you.

Even the rust rusted.

Growing up in Denmark I can't tell you how many coats of rust transformer my dad and I applied to his Yugo. When the then 13 year old Yugo finally got traded in it was mostly bondo and converted rust. The engine still ran like new though.

I used The Rustoleum on the frame of my Sport Trac and it kills the rust and protects the metal.. Worked for me. It is a good premptive thing to do...

Joe, are you getting "rust" on the aluminum portion of the truck? Not sure if the typical rust inhibitors will work on aluminum.

Nope. This is full blown, orange, iron/steel rust. It's the top half between the top and bottom body. That's the worse part. I do have it elsewhere also. I don't know what can be done with aluminum....

This is some of the crap I'm talking about.....
It's a bit worse on the inside of that spot and there is a some more of it on the side.

That's a common spot for rust to form, either due to a leak in the rubber gasket [you have two dissimilar metals next to each other there, the aluminum body tub and the steel roof and upper body]. It's really too bad that AM General didn't use an aluminum roof assembly on these trucks.

Spot fixing may work for the short term, I'd check the interior under the carpet/trim and see how bad it is on the inside.

Ideally you would take the upper interior out, unbolt the roof and pull that off, then cut out all the rusted steel and weld in new steel and finish to match, then sand/reprime the aluminum and buy new seals and button everything back together. That's a huge amount of labor to do though.

I had to do it on my soft op [rusted roll bars] I can't imagine how much work it is for a wagon.

Yeah... Thats what I was thinking. I looked around the forum and read a few posts about it. Not fun, but if you want it right....

I remember one cause is high pressure washer wands at self wash and truck stops especially. On the wagons you should keep from blasting the seal/gasket between the roof and wagon body, since the seal is painted over and is hard to the touch, some folks might miss that detail and wind up injecting water into the seal. That's one theory behind the rust.
