OEM H3 offroad light switch question

I have a question about the oem H3 offroad light switches that come with the roof mounted and lower grill lights. These switches fit in the two accessory holes in the lower part of the center console. Has anyone used them with a different set of lights? I am getting some KC lights for a new roof rack :shifty: and need some switches for the lights. I really like the fit and look of the oem switches and wondering how difficult it would be to wire them to a different set of lights.

You can wire the oem switches to the kc lights via a pigtail adapter, i dont remember the part number for it, solar has it tho

A switch is a switch. it can operate anything. I installed the two OEM switches and pigtails (bought from Gene at GMPartshouse) I connected them to the sets of wires already in the harness thru the firewall for the accessory kits to use, and drove my own two relays and two pairs of lights instead of the accessory kit ones.

here's the wiring I used (from the Helm service manuals)

on the old site someone used these switches(attached), I just can't remember who did it, but it fits perfect in the grooves. It's the fifth one down type http://www.offroadcontrols.com/2orccomp.htm

It's been a while since I installed mine, but I used the OEM switches with generic lights. If I recall correctly, the switches break the ground and not the hot going back to the relay. I had nothing really to reference as far as official instructions (though 4speed gave me a great writeup -- Posted below).

Hey again,
Jeez....where do I begin? I dug thru my "stuff" and found my original off-road lighting kit instructions and also some part numbers....

PART NUMBERS...
Off road light kit....#88964831 which includes all the parts to install the lights. I believe all of these part numbers are 5-digits because they are "sub numbers" included as part of the kit. I'm not sure of the actual GM part numbers for the individual pieces...only the entire kit.
Hardware kit to install the lights...#25531 (this would get you all the factory stuff to hook up your lights...not sure if it can be bought outside of the complete 88964831 kit)
Switch Wire Harness....#22505
Switch... #22506 (this one had an UP arrow on it)

I bought these two parts separate when I added my bull-bar and Hellas. These you will definately want...
Switch Wire Harness...#12101864
Switch...#88963885 (this one had a DOWN arrow on it)

Here's the switches. They have a 3-wire mini-plug harness that plugs into the back of the switch. The one on the right came with the kit as sub-part #22506, and the one on the left is the #88963885...

DIRECTIONS (Interior connections)...
(I pulled these directly from the instructions...but, I edited some of stuff that doesn't matter for your installation).

13. Locate black blunt cut on right side of driver's footwell above the footwell lamp. This wire may be taped up into the harness. Splice this wire to the black wire in Pin B of the switch connector. Note: If vehicle is equipped with a trailer brake or front off-road lights, this wire will be used already.
14. Route the orange and white wires from the switch over the steering column support.
15. Locate blunt cut wires under the instrument panel on the left side of drivers footwell above parking brake. These wires may be taped back onto the harness branch. If so, cut tape to free wires. Splice the orange blunt cut wire to the orange wire in Pin A of the switch connector.
16. Splice the white-striped, black blunt cut wire to the white wire in Pin C of the switch connector.

Here's looking upwards from the floor mat. You can see the pink crimp connectors where I attached the switch wires per the instructions....

DIRECTIONS (Under hood connections)...

23. Locate 6 black blunt cuts in the engine compartment behind the driver's side wheel well. Splice the white-striped black blunt cut wire to teh white wire in the harness.
24. Splice orange blunt cut to the orange harness wire.
25. Splice black blunt cut from vehicle to black wire in harness.

I could not get a good pic of the "blunts" but they are just below my hand in this photo (this is near the driver-side hood hinge). I'm pointing at the relay that comes with the overhead light kit, and the wires that come out of this get connected to the blunts. Also shown is the other relay (bolted to the fender), that I added for the Hella lights on the bull bar. These lights were wired up in a similar fashion, except I tapped into the fusbox for power, and used the button and harness shown above in red...

These directions suck...as they are telling you what color wire to connect to the supplied harnesses (which you won't have). Long story short...the switch gets connected to the BLK, ORG, and BLK/WHT STRIPE wires that are stubbed near the emergency brake pedal. The relay gets connected to the BLK, ORG, and BLK/WHT STRIPE wires that are under the hood near the power brake booster. So...I guess the guy on CHO was right...you don't need to route any wiring thru the firewall.

I DID however need to route thru the firewall for my front Hellas (on the bull-bar). That install I did without GM's crazy blunt instructions.

If you not confused by now...there must be something wrong with you!

Don't sweat it...Just grab some lights, a relay, some wire and I can talk you thru it if need be. The two switches and matching harnesses would be nice. I'm sure the harnesses are the same (#12101864) so you can go ahead and get two of those. The down switch (#88963885) is no problem. But the up switch part number is unknown. You might try a digit before or after the 88963885 number...sometimes GM numbers them right next to each other.

Whew. That gave me a headache!

I have both switches....one with an arrow UP (for the windshield lights), and one with the arrow DOWN (for the Hella's I run on the bull bar). The UP switch came with the factory off-road light package that mounts above the windshield (useless by the way). The DOWN switch I bought separately from Hummer. Both install in the factory locations on the main dash panel, and both are prone to getting accidentally bumped and turned on. Which by the way will melt the plastic covers on the overhead windshield lights. Having been there, done that....forget the factory switches. Just go by some zombie switches and put em someplace away from the console.

sorry for necro thread bumping, but does anyone still have a copy of the instructions Solar had? I'm trying to wire up some lights to the factory switch. Actually, 2 sets of lights, if anyone has done that I could use some pointers. Thanks.

I don't have the instructions, but I recently just figured out how this entire roof light relay harness works the way GM intended it to work. So it doesn't work how do you think it would work. Typically when you are installing an accessory with a relay, #86 serves as the positive trigger wire that turns the accessory on and off. This positive wire comes from the switch itself and when you turn the switch on, the relay triggers but thats not how it is set up here.

In this case the relay is triggered by #85 which is ground. So that means, that #30 and #86 use the same power source from the fuse box. So from the switch, you ground the switch to a piece of metal behind the dash, then that wire goes out of the firewall to the relay and when you click the switch on it provides the ground that the relay needs to trigger, because remember #86 is already receiving positive signal from the fusebox.

I actually made a video of this on my phone so I remember how this relay set up works. What I will do is upload it to Google Drive and you can click the link to watch the video. Also you can DM me on Instagram or Facebook and I can offer any questions you may have. @Acer4LO / @Acer Miller
