It was told to me one day that I should have a spare PMD on hand for my H1.
Is there a big problem with them? Is buying aftermarket better? Around $250?
What the hell is the #9 resistor that will hook up to the PMD to help out the performance of the 6.5L Turbo? Is all of this plug in or has to be hand wired?

You should probably have a spare. If you are mechanically inclined and have small hands you can replace it in the stock location without too much trouble. It is much easier to buy the relocation kit and it can be changed in minutes. The one on my 2000 has lasted till now and 90000 miles with no issues but I have a spare.

Thanks. Relo kit? Is there a good place to buy one and is there a part number?

I was looking at Predator the other day--they have the relocate kit, but I'm not so sure they're going to be the cheapest. They do have LOTs of awesome stuff to make your H1 prettier, faster, cooler, neater---but all the good stuff I'd like to have rings in at $1K or better. I would get an improved version of the PMD for relaibility, that seems to be one of the top hits for problems.
You could also try Blue HUMMMER.
Good luck with this, you lucky bastaad!

The new style PMD has a different connector I think. PMD is a pump mounted driver. It is installed on the injection pump that is located in the valley of the block. Many people mount a relocation kit and if their PMD fails they just plug in the new one. They do fail over time from a combination of heat and vibration. Dave Breggin at Blue Hummer sells them as do several other places.

If it's mounted on the engine block, isnt that kinda a dumb place to design one? Heat and vibration wise? Does the kit mount it somewhere away from the engine block?

If I'm not mistaken, one of the reasons the PMD is mounted on the block, is so it can back off fuel if the engine gets too hot.

I personally dont carry one with me but, It wouldnt hurt to have one. On my long trip that ive talked about for a while, I did not have a spare PMD, and my truck does not have a relocation for it currently. I will probably buy one soon, but I doubt I will put it on until my PMD fails

it was engineered to be cooled by fuel as it went through the injection pump (which it is mounted to). One theory (as David mentioned) is that they fail due to the major heat soak that takes place when the engine is cut off -- Hummers run hot and there's not as much ventilation under the hood/in the tunnel as one might think. The transistors in the pmd are encased in a substance which Mike S says cracks with all the vibration. They get hot fast, even away from the engine.

a guy on the hml sells these kits (maybe the ones Dave at Bluehummer sells?):

the pmd problem happens in all vehicles with the 6.5 td...non-hummer related pages abound:

Thanks All!
As always, top notch information from the guys! I'm going to wait and see what I have before buying one now. It's not a bad idea to get a spare later to have just in case.

OH Yeah... One more thing....
Some sites say the PMD has a resistor (for $30 extra) to improve performance. Why??? What's the resistor all about?
I bought resistors before, even the high wattage type, add they don't come close to $30. I think they called it a #9 resistor. #9???
