Problem with rear brake light - expensive solution from service station

Recently I encountered a problem - the rear brake light does not work. At first I thought that the problem was in the steering column switch.
I went to the service station, where they immediately offered to buy a new switch for $ 9990, without even trying to check the cause.
Friends from the TirParts company let me test the new switch without buying it. I carefully connected it - the problem is not in it. So, the cause is somewhere else, and the service station, it seems, just wanted to sell an expensive part without real diagnostics. Has anyone encountered this?

Sounds like you should check the fuse box first, then check the bulbs and clean the ground wires. If none of the above helps you probably have a broken wire that you will need to trace down to find it.
Good luck!
