This is late by almost two months but only recently I was made aware of that one of the pinnacles of American soldiers passed away. CSM Plumley is most well known for his involvement in the Battle of La Drang during the Vietnam War due to the Hollywood movie 'We Were Soldiers' in which Sam Elliot played him.

He served in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War as Combat Infantry (Combat Infantry Badge with two stars, two stars representing two wars he fought in combat in addition to be first awarded the badge).
He is a Master Parachutist with Gold Star (Gold Star representing 5 parachute drops into combat)
Those being a couple different awards awarded to him during his 32 years of service (He was awarded 28 different awards for a total of 40 awards)

CSM Plumley enlisted in 1942 during WWII and retired in 1974. After retirement, CSM Plumley was an administrator CSM Plumley passed away at age 92 on October 10, 2012. His daughter said his health had been declining ever since his wife of 63 years passed away this Memorial Day.

CSM Plumley is revered in the military not only for his service, but for his actions after his service. When called about his war stories, he simply hung up. He helped open the Army's National Infantry Museum in 2009, including helping get Sam Elliot to narrate at ceremony dedication during the opening of the museum.
