Rear King Off-Road Racing Shocks

I had King me some adjustable rears to help fix some ride issues I've had & to provide some adjustability for towing & on or offroad ride quality.

Here's some pics:

I had a heck of time trying to get them to build these for me. I spent 3 months & what was a custom order turned into a project to get them to follow through. I can provide details if anyone's interested in the nitty gritty. I'm iffy on working w/ King on any custom shocks ever again. The customer is not a priority in their eyes.

The shocks on the other hand have been great. They are rebuildable & King does offer a free revalve if the stock valving is not adequate. I haven't had a need to revalve, so I haven't tested that aspect of the company yet.
The packaging method King uses is barnone the best I've dealt with from any company, short of shipping optical equipment. That speaks volumes. There's no way for their product to be damaged during shipping. We all know how hard UPS is on boxes.
Fit & finish is great. I only wish both shocks had the res line on the side (only the left does). I just prefer it not to be so close to the tire. My only other beef is the schrader valve & knob location. If the knob was mounted on the top, the shock could be adjusted by reaching into the wheel well. As it stands, I have to climb under the vehicle to adjust. It's not horrible, but annoying. Instead, the scharder valve is up top & easy to fill. I run 200 PSI in these. King says anywhere from 150 psi to 250 psi is acceptable, but that number will vary depending on which tech you speak with. I split the difference & run 200.

I also have the front shocks with adjuster as well. The same basic review applies. Only in that case, the shocks arrived with a few scratches. I can deal with it, but for the cost, it's unacceptable. More on price in a bit. As well, the fronts were not ordered directly through King, but by proxy through Summit Racing. I found out that while King offers adjusters on the front, they have no entry in their computer for it. This became a huge ordering issue & required calls between Summit & King on my behalf more than once. King just doesn't know what they are doing half the time, it seems. Summit agreed with me & was frustrated with the situation so much so that they asked me to call King directly. That's a first for me with ordering anything custom.

The fronts & back are based on the kit 25001-273. My kit would be called 25001-273a, with a = adjuster. Only Summit & a handful of other sellers list the 273 full kit. Otherwise, the fronts are 25001-270 & rears are 25001-271. The stock kit for shocks all around will set you back about $1620. Not cheap, but they are built well. Here's a shot.

The kit I had built (addition of adjuster knob & "custom" valving which is simply standard valving for adjusters based on vehicle weight) ran $1134 x2, so just under $2300. Not cheap, but I am happy with them for the money, considering I needed adjustable shocks.

I need to replace a lot of other components before giving a review of the ride quality. I can say that these eat up a lot more of the road than the stock shocks & have no issues on roads that have 8" to 12" of travel.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Very nice. Not sure I want to be that ambitious to have that trick of a shock but it would be very tempting for the desert runs I'm putting the deuce through since I've been here in El Centro.

I am a little creeped out and kind of understanding about the first pics--you took them while the shocks were still in your bed; did you really have to have sex with them before you installed them?

Gotta rob the cradle. ;)

We have swamps here, nothing like the desert, but there's roads here that are awful. So bad to the point that you must have a truck. I took another ride out today after upgrading more of my suspension to test the shocks more. The faster I go, the smoother it gets. These bad boys absorb everything. Anything mildly offroad (haven't pushed these at all in mud) has been a breeze. I have no doubt they'd eat up desert runs. If you were getting air born, I'd probably say nothing less than 3.0s (these are 2.5s) if you're carrying a lot of cargo.

I've seen trophy buggies out here eating up endless whoops without the body moving from it's plane of motion--you can just sitting and watch them clocking out at 80mph and faster and all that's moving up and down is the tires. First time I watched a buggy do that I tried to do the same in the deuce and realized I was grounded in a whole different world, it was a rough go for me to say the least.

Kings are absolutely badass. My brother runs king 2.5 resi's on his jeep and holy ****....they offer no body roll into corners, they absorb anything, they flex well, they handle high speed great. I would love a set of kings...but the price tells me otherwise. His set he bought used off a guy for around 1k but normally a set of 4 is pushing 2k just for shocks...I'm happy with how mine rides on a set on 200 dollar shocks up front and free ones in the back. Lol I run bilstein and they are the perfect shock for wanting more performance without spending a ton of money but one day if I come across a deal on kings and I have the spare cash I will pick some up because they make a HUGE difference

The body roll is much better than stock. The body roll isn't totally gone though, since most of the suspension is worn out. Every time I upgrade something, the ride quality goes up. Once I get everything replaced, it'll feel like I'm riding on glass. I have a Spohn rear control arm kit, along with the rear axle tie rod on order (should get here tomorrow). That should fix all the shaking, jumping & popping I hear in the back. I think after that upgrade, I'll feel nothing due to the Kings.

Speaking of Bilstein, I've had numerous people tell me to go Bilstein. 8 of 6 shocks I've owned blew out in under 15k miles of 100% highway usage. I ordered a Bilstein "dampener" that was so over charged that it pushed the steering wheel to the right, even when turned left. I have a rancho on there now & it's working properly. I contacted Bilstein about it & their reasoning for the stabilizer being positively pressured in one direction was BS. They were more annoyed that someone was calling & complaining about a defect. They have a 'holier than thou" attitude.

I have rancho shocks on an H3 & I'm debating between Fox & King. I'm really not sure. I know Bebe runs fox shocks & loves them. I've heard they are soft when cornering though. That's enough for me to consider dealing with king again. Maybe some custom rear end work & coilover. I'd love to eliminate the leaf springs in the rear. I guess this topic is for another day though & another sub forum...
