Could use some more help with this one.
When coming to a stop from a speed of over 20 mph, I can feel a high frequency shaking or chatter. If I really stand on the brakes it kinda goes away. It happens with just normal stopping.
The guy I bought it from said he had new brake pads installed. I have the invoice from a week ago. His service guy says it's just the pads needing to wear in. Once they are seated properly, the noise and shake will go away.
Does that sound right to you all or am I looking at another problem? Half shafts?

Might be. I'm trying to remember but at the slower speeds below 10-15mph I dont seem to feel it at all. It doesnt happen all the time. most of the time, but there has been times that it didn't make that shake. Also coming to a stop, I can feel the play in the half shafts i thibk. Come to a stop an I feel a small amount of rocking back and forth. Not much but you can feel it.

Sounds like the rotors need to be turned.

The rocking back and forth is completely normal. That is from the geared hubs. If it bothers you it doesn't take long to learn to brake and minimize the back and forth. The older H1s have a floating system that does require some break in period for new pads. You will get some shuddering occasionally when braking. If you let off the pedal and reapply pressure it should be gone but I believe the brake system was upgraded in 95 to eliminate that. You need to chamfer the edges of the pads or you will get that grabbing and shuddering until the pads get seated in well.

That makes sense. The shaking is not a problem for me. As long as it's not something to worry about, then I'm cool with it.
The rocking doesn't bother me at all. The wife says it makes her sea sick! :giggle: Oh Well.... Can't win them all.
Thanks all!

Joe, not saying the rotors don't need to be turned, just saying there can be other causes for the shuddering. Not chamfering the pad edges will cause that symptom until they get worn in.

I am doing the brakes on my truck now. I talked to Dave O, Hummer parts guy when I bought the pads and he warned me if you do not chamfer the edges of the pads before installation they would shutter. We ground the edge off. The pads were edge actually stuck out a little further than the rest of the pad. This may be your problem. Looks like a nice truck. My birthday is the 13th of January.

Good info! Thanks!
I understand (from a reliable source) that all of the people born in January are great looking and extremely smart. It's obvious to me.

Completely agree! Mine is the 10th.

I had new pads put on my truck recently and they *did* sound a little bit different than the old ones. By now the sound is gone or I have gotten used to it :)

I had "CRANKIT" On my Harley back years ago. When I sold the bike , I turned in the plates. When I bought my new Harley Fatboy, I tried to get it back but someone nailed it already. I'm going to look into it for the 1.

I wish I could get CRANKIT. I'm only allowed 6 letters for some stupid reason. Tried CRANK, and thats taken. When I find out who he is, I'll have to kick his a$$! As long as he's not bigger than me, that is...

But I did order a new plate!
