mind you, in high school we built pipe bombs with gunpowder bought at the local hardware store. Obviously, we weren't trying hard enough to kill ourselves... pulsejets is the answer

though that said, my retirement years will be LSR (land speed record) with steam power....

Why not I don't think u got enough projects. But u may want to stick with oval circuits, ones with turns may be a death wish in this one.

I've already constructed a jet engine from an old t25 turbocharger. Not terribly difficult with propane. The trick is miniaturizing everything with oil supply and cooling.

Search eBay for jet turbine and a apu turbines are usually available and the occasional jet engine comes up from time to time if you are really brave.
