Speed sensors and ABS will block your TCase from shifting

Good news: I'm back. :) The Hummer was parked for about a year with several things wrong... rebuilt my driveshaft, replaced my exhaust and cracked manifold, and a few other things. The rear wheel speed sensor was out and an ABS fault light was on, PLUS the transfer case wouldn't shift to lock or 4 low. So I took the hummer to a brake shop, they replaced the speed sensor and it immediately started shifting into lock and 4low.

So you may know this, but thought I'd post it now that I figured it out: A broken tire speed sensor will prevent the transfer case from shifting.

You can outsmart it and change modes if you are in a jam. Start pressing the shift mode button BEFORE turning the ignition to run. As long as you can get the TC to shift before it gets the bad ABS sensor signal, it will shift.

Yep I've dealt with this before and did what 08h3 did....sometimes if you can't do it quick enough it won't work so you either A) undo the encoder motor and do it manually or B) get an abs scanner to clear the code to shift it

I also carry a Shiftster when I go wheeling. This will also allow you to change modes if other items go out as well.

Ok, so that's a manual replacement of the encoder motor? Where do I get one of those (do you have a link)? That is super cool!!!!

Have you checked the bolt pattern of it matches your transfer case encoder bolt pattern? I had a very long chat with the manufacturer, and it turns out, it does not work with my H3.

Not yet. I have been meaning to but have been healing from a back issue. I added that to my list of items to do on the Hummer (THORparts bumper just got there today!).
