When you replace the steering rack and you have high miles (I have 102,000), you should also replace the power steering pump HOSE that goes from the pump to the rack. The hose assembly is about $115. I replaced the rack but not the hose and wouldn't you know it but the first trail out that hose blew on me, leaving me with no power steering. Which is really fun, BTW. This would've been super easy to replace with the rack.

Very good advice. I had exactly the same problem but when I replaced the pump. The only hose we didn't replace blew up on the trails. At least check the integrity of hose by looking for cracks in the rubber.

Has anyone done a post-mortem on failing steering racks to determine the failing part of the rack? Is it general wear-and-tear and are the racks repairable? I'm wondering if the racks could be repaired with better parts to improve the weak areas.

It's the body of the rack that snaps, IMO it's not something you could "fix" you just need to set it up so it,s not stressed so that it will fail.

Maybe add a brace across there so when it does break you can steer off the trail to repair.

There are a couple of looong threads on those questions.
