H3 Tranny dead

Part of my V8 swap included adapting the i5 tranny to the V8 setup/ torque converter.
Replaced the stator shaft with (A74529E), band and servo. Torque converter from an alpha and bell housing from a Yukon.
The truck ran perfectly, but I had (EDIT:slight) leaking issues. Changed the seal twice after that.

Was doing 60mph on the highway last week, when all of the sudden the tranny "disengages"? rpm shot up instantly as if gear was in N.
Pulled over, tried putting it in reverse, no movement.
The gear lever was still stiff, went under, gear selector was intact and responding to gear changes, but the truck wouldn't actually change gears or move.

Took it to the shop, they said the tranny is gone. Tomorrow they'll open it up to see what went wrong.

Can anyone vouch for a specific brand rebuild/upgrade kit for the 4L60e?

I'm not big on tranny knowledge but when I stuck a 383 in my last project I beefed up the 700R4 with a raptor junior stage 2 kit from PATC. It held through a lot of abuse. May be an option for you.

Sounds like pump took a crap. I recently replaced my trans with GM reman. The converter was ticking loudly and suspected was breaking up internally so replaced entire unit due to material traveling around the internal passages.
if you rebuild yours , an up grade to a 5 planetary gear assembly is a recommended if yours still has the 4 gear one.

PATC full 4l60e stage 3 with shaft upgrade was around $3300 delivered. The stage 3 is rated for up to 600 hp so I am sure it is more than fine. I believe Bebe runs the stage 3 also.

Verdict: pump and burnt clutches. No news on TC yet.
Thanks guys, Buying a beefed up tranny would be nice, shipping would be a nightmare though. Around $2000 just to get it here.

Just buy the internal kit (clutches, pump, servo, .......) and have a transmission shop rebuild your current 4L60E. It'll save you in fright charges.

Doing a rebuild kit would save you in freight but have to be honest. After having 2 failed rebuilds I bought the entire new trans and have been issue / worry free now with some of the hardest quality shifts ever. You can choose factory, sport or hard race and after doing the sport for awhile and not noticing anything I did the hard race and now it shifts like my dads old 67 Camaro race car.

That is true. Rebuild failure rate is pretty much 90% over here. I'll need to reconsider and shop around, otherwise ill be doing the same thing a few months down the line.

My neighbor drove mine after the trans swap and he changed his with the same one. I have been doing a lot of work on his truck. Replaced most of the front suspension parts (shocks, upper c arms, lower c arms, sway bar linkage and a set of my torsion bars). He sticks to 33" tires so doesn't have the 4th gear hunting mine has and I have to say it really is a great daily driver. I am going to change out his muffler this weekend with a 44 like I did along with a MBRP resonator. I will post up some pictures when I am done with it.

I'm surprised Doha doesn't have better mechanics with all the high end sports cars over there. I've been to Doha back in 08-09 when I was deployed to Iraq. Really nice place with alot of money invested in that city. Loved the 4 or 5 story mall with the ice rink. Enjoyed the Old and Gold market also.

Lets just say professionals are scarce, and if they exist they charge an arm and a leg. Most shops prefer the remove and replace over remove and repair.

Anyway, Most of those expensive cars you saw are generally owned by the locals and most of them can afford dealer prices (or dont even care about the prices). GM spare parts cost triple the prices here when compared to rockauto.com for example (hence why many of us are willing to pay ridiculous international shipping rates to qatar and buy them from the states as they would still be at 60% of local prices by the time they arrive)
The UAE has a bigger market and this is usually where the ppl are.

Heres the damage. Mechanic rebuilt the transmission before I could see anything.
Don't know what parts he used for replacements.

Truck runs fine for now. Im skeptical

That's the pump rotor. That going out cause the loss of pressure which probably cascaded into burnt clutches. I would double check that he put a whole new pump assembly. Chances are that damage scarred the pump housing. The other internals were likely fine with a standard rebuild.

So just as expected, tranny is down again. A last minute Christmas present to make sure I Uber for the rest of the Holiday season.
This last rebuild gave me only 4k miles.

If I don’t score a new 4L60 here at a good price, would be wise to cut my losses, sell the 3 & be done with it.

Crazy, So heat is the number 1 killer of transmissions but in this case was it just brute force? Like towing something super heavy just snaps parts?

No none of that, I have a large tranny cooler installed. Was just bad work on the rebuilds, and it may be that the original torque converter was replaced with a rebuilt one. Mechanic had lost it for a week, then found it and installed it without me seeing it. Red flags everywhere.

But could be anything really. I was warned against opening up a tranny in Qatar.

Haven’t taken it to the shop yet, test driving a couple of trucks, and eying a 2016 Sierra slt.

Don't give up yet! You are so close to getting the truck just the way you want. I understand things are harder to get done over there but there are so many solutions to a transmission for the h3. Let us know if you need help getting parts over there

Thanks man, you’re right.. I’ve gotten the truck into such good shape. The engine, all its new accessories, brand new suspension.. All round its a great running truck. Selling an H3 here would get me 10k in this market, 3k if it doesn’t have a running tranny.

What I think would save this project is a good used, complete transmission assembled in the USA with with a new torque converter. Something I know wouldn’t let me down.

My sister moved to Florida, she could help with shipping & logistics if I manage to find a decent tranny in her area. I’ll start looking!

Would appreciate a shout if someone spots a good deal.
