Wallace Falls WA trail clearing

Wallace Falls is a very popular trail to hike in Western Washington. There are gates blocking the trail, but because of its popularity, Snohomish County Search and Rescue is permitted to go up and do trail maintenance along with the mild wheeling that the area provides. It also saves a 13 mile (or 6 mile up a steep trail) walk (and yes, that's 26 miles round trip.)

Here's the group

the last Jeep in the picture is the head of our SAR organization - a Snohomish County deputy

We cleared this trail (the trees) in March - 50 trees across the trail... this time was just to widen the trail so our largest support vehicle could get to the top.

This is a picture from the tree-clearing

as you might see, we had to air-down that time because of the snow

Awesome...

I would love to participate in events like this one. Mild wheeling plus doing something good for the community.
Is there a way to find out if something like that happening in my area?

Most Search and Rescue organizations are overseen by the county sheriff's office. I'd start there and ask who does SAR there. If not the county, then the State has a roster of who they call when schmidt hits the fan. You could also contact whomever is in charge of CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) and ask who does SAR (there are a few that are actually combined). Outside of those, if you do trail running and see a sign "maintained by ____ 4x4 association" - call them, they'll know.

Nice!

ArtHummer, keep an eye out for local 4x4 groups, local forums, etc. Talk to the Forest Service and 4x4 shops. There are periodically cleanups in my area, though admittedly I haven't been able to particpate in a while.

Here's a pic from one of our cleanups. This was a Jeep Cherokee of some sort, I think.

ok that is funny as hell!!! LOL

This is a great idea and although we do something similar on the down low, i am going to look into creating an event for a cleanup... I am always taking my kids camping/fishing and I have instilled in them for years that we pick up something (trash) and dispose of it every time we go. "Leave it better then we found it"

We wheelers' here in NJ get a bad rap from the authorities but as we all know it only takes a couple jackasses to ruin it for all us. I am going to contact the NJ State Forrest Rangers and see if I can set something up. Thanks for the idea guys!
