just wondering how many of you guys have winches vs tow straps?
and also is it worth getting a winch, i see they can be on up there in price.
or is it better to just buy a tow strap for a 4th the price haha
and also tell me what brand you use in either one just trying to get a feel on which route i should take
thanks

I have both. A winch is a must if your out wheeling a lone. A tow strap is good if your in a group and someone is always close by to give you a quick tug.

I have both. usually the tow strap is much, much quicker and easier than the winch. As long as you don't wheel alone I'd say go with a tow strap and shackles.

I have both, but haven't used either yet LOL :whaa:

Time for you to do some wheeling then....:giggle: I have not gotten buried, but I have gotten hung up.......... But Spillkill, if one can afford a winch I believe it is a must if you ever wheel alone. With one you can go exploring without worrying too much about what not to go thru. I have yet to get one, as soon as finances allow I will be getting one. Would love a Warn, but there is a few less pricey ones out there that are okay.

Let me add my personal opinion:

Never wheel alone. The most effective safety precaution one can take, is making sure there's someone around to help you if you get stuck. If your truck gets stuck or disabled, the other vehicle can, as a worst case scenario, help you get home. If you wheel alone and don't have supplies, communications etc, worst case is you die. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but it's reality and it happens.

If you *do* want to be able to get yourself out of a stuck situation, keep in mind that a while a winch is great, it's useless if you have nothing to hook the winch cable up to and pull against. So, in my opinion a winch should always be accompanied by other gear such as "tree saver" straps, shackles, and maybe some form of anchor you get stuck in a place with no usable winch points.

I have a winch but I always carry both, a recovery/snatch strap (dynamic stretch) to pull out a "stuck" vehicle, and a tow strap (with a static pull & not designed to stretch and rebound) to tow a disabled vehicle off the trail. A lot of times the terms recovery and tow strap are used interchangeably, but there is a huge difference.

I typically do not wheel alone so I have never needed a winch However, I do have the winch kit for my HiLift that would allow me to get out of predicaments if I ever needed one. Anybody that wheels should have a strap though.

I agree but would like to add that wheeling can mean more than doing severe roads or trails. It can mean just going out on some dirt/snow covered roads that are normally easy to traverse but turn into something else during bad weather. And in some cases, the bad weather can be hundreds of miles away and the wash you crossed in one direction is dry but when coming back it has a couple of feet of running water and mud.

Whatever you get, do not skimp on quality to save a few bucks.

I cannot tell you how many el cheapo straps I have seen break over the years,

or worse.......a damn hook or shackle break loose and become a projectile.

Straps, shackles,winch...none are items you want to fail due to poor quality.

I totally agree on the fact one should never wheel alone. But if one loves to wheel and sees a good opportunity, myself I will take advantage of the chance for some fun. But with that said, one should have all the goodies to go with their winch. There are a few gentlemen that has pics of their recovery gear to get a good idea. Hunner has quite the adventure package of goodies. Always love looking over the pics for ideas of must haves, and want to do's....:)

I can't wait , but there's not a lot of choices close by. There used to be a Hummer club here but by the looks of their website they havent been active for quite awhile. Lots of Hummers around though.
Its really too bad they closed the national forrest down to off roading. I deer hunt out there and always wanted to get a jeep or Hummer out there for some off roading.
