rear bumper and swing away carrier

Hey guys just sharing my rear bumper build. There was a couple really nice rear bumpers on the market but just not quite what I wanted. So decided to build my own. Bumper is built from 3/16th plate that I had pressed to form the main bumper. I was trying to follow body lines for looks. Mine did not come with a trailer hitch and you guys on here were able to give me some pictures of the stock setup with the rear frame brackets are already cut for. So my trailer hitch is made from .250 wall square tube that extends to the driver side for my COMP4x4 HD spindle sleeve. Whats nice on the COMP4x4 spindle is they give you a DOM sleeve to weld in so you dont lose integrity in the spindle by welding it then having it shear. Its a double shear design for 35" and bigger tire. I did a bumper for a buddy with 40" and its surviving pretty well. I also added a second tow hook (thanks solarflare!).

I must of come down on the bumper extension offroad because all the plastic behind the outer shell was broken. So I formed the corners for a more complete look. They sit higher than the stock plastic.

So this is where it sits right now, I need to pull it off and do some bracing in the inside paint and primer the crap out of it. All while having a 2.5 year old and 2 month old around so its going really sloooowwww. :giggle: I will post more pics off the inside later.

Little more progress not much since we fried the chop saw. Here are some inside pics of the bumper. Nothing super crazy, with all the material bent it is stiff as hell!! You can see where I did my own trailer hitch and I extended it on the driver side for the spindle assembly to sit so the force is transmitted to the hitch. Here it is painted and installed.

I have a trip planned the week after next soo I need to at least get the tire mounted and figure out how I want to do the hi lift and the 2 Scepter gas cans. Kind off losing interest since I will be buying a T soon. But want to make nice for the next guy.

hey guys a little more of an update finished the arm tire carrier and latch system. Still have to make a high lift jack mount and dual gas can holder for the passenger side. I post a painted pic with the tire mounted tomorrow.

Any plans on making a rear bumper for the T? I like the THOR bumper but would like to see if one can be made that wraps around the sides like this one.

Honestly I dont know yet, i drop my tailgate alot. For me it might be a pain in the butt specially with the teardrop im building. I have been thinking of a hitch mounted swing away with tire carrier and gas cans for my long distance trips. I would love to build one for someone close lol. Preferablly with dual swing on gas hinges. Im sure you could modify a thor bumper to wrap around.

What sleeve length did you use from Comp 4x4? I'm still in the works about fabing a spare gate. I have the Thor bumper and should I use a backing plate?

Support it as much as you can, I even left that part of the welding to a professional because I would hate myself if that ever broke loose on the highway! (if it hit anyone at any speed it would cause some good damage, if not kill them)

Looking back I wish I went with the Comp 4x4 one over the EMS off road because I like their design far more! If you need me to take some measurements on my Thor parts bumper on my T let me know and I can send them to you

Sorry just saw my old post lol. I believe i went with 10" or 8" then cut it down to fit. Talkking about the backing plate for the support brace?? I didnt but i had tapped the bumper which was 3/16th plate and bolted it down.

Well long time over due but I finished my dads bumper with jack and dual gas can holder. It quite finished, I am going to make it lockable down the road. Spending 5 days in death valley in Nov and need to do some finishing touches on the teardrop.
