Transmission going out?

Feel free to chime in on this one.

In the past few days my H3 has got stuck in 2nd gear twice. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this. Going thru heavy traffic and in and out of side side streets I accelerated the Trans went into second gear then just stood there. I eased of the gas at 4k rpm and came to a complete stop. Too off again and same thing. I pulled over to restart truck. Drove off again and back to normal. This happened again today but it fixed itself without the restart.
I have a alpha with 81K

Any suggestions?

Do you have a temp gauge for your trans? Similar things happened to me when I overheated my trans.

How hot was it outside? Traffic and heat will bring up the temps quickly.

If you only have 2 and 3 it may have gone into limp mode and burnt up a solenoid. Those are easy to change, just above the trans filter.

Have you ever changed the trans fluid?

I don't have a temp gauge.

In the past two days its been in the high 90s. The only thing is the first time it happened I had only driven about one mile when she started acting up. The only thing that seemed different was a speed bump I hit a little fast. I figured that could not be it because worse things I've done.

I have never changed my Trans fluid. I checked it today and looks full and not discolored.

Also when this happened it hand first and second gear. Seems like it would not go higher than second. I would come to complete stop, start in first, switch to second and that's it. Stuck in second gear. One time once I hit 4500 rpm I eased off throttle and just heard engine beak to lower rpm.

I have a feeling something will break on the road tomorrow.

Are you the original owner? If so, no trans fluid change with 81k you are overdue.

I'd start there. If you destroyed any solenoids you would have a check engine light

Its still not fixed. Dealer kept it for a week but they could not determine if it was a failure since the test drive was ok. I have changed fluids since and same problem persist. Not sure exactly what causes the problem. Sometimes after a sharp turn or stop n go traffic she gets stuck in 2nd..

I only have about 3k miles left on warranty, so I just have run her hard and see if it breaks within warranty. Also my mpg tech keeps bouncing up and down instead of smooth readings

I had that issue when I changed my t-case fluid. It wouldn't shift because to re-fill the t-case, you have to remove the speed sensor. I didn't screw that in all the way and it wasn't close enough to the gears to read the speed, thus messing up the shift points. Might not be your issue, but something to keep in mind if you change your fluid... Or, perhaps your speed sensor is going bad if your tech is bouncing around.

Hopefully, no one pulled his speed sensor to add fluid to the t/case.If they did, they have overfilled the t/case. Sounds to me like a solenoid....

I would not do it if I ware you. You have a warranty and the truck is not perfect. Do not abuse it because it might brake after the 3K and then you are screwed. If you already took it to dealership and they can't fix it, call to Hummer Warranty Department and demand a new transmission. At tel them to do it quick, since you have only 3K left.

Could it be possible to bump the speed sensor going over a steep incline? I did go over a pile of dirt and bottomed out a few times. I do have OEM Ucp.

Mines an '06, I'm told I have to add through the speed sensor to reach the proper fluid amount, so this info is wrong?

Mike

No, if you have a stock t/case you remove the speed sensor to add fluid. However, I was answering a statement made about the OP's vehicle, which is an Alpha; thus 08 or later.

Anything is possible, but not likely. Worth a check. However, if the speed sensor is out you you should set a P05** code stating a problem with the VSS circuit.

I'm still thinking an intermittent problem with a shift usually (I say USUALLY) points to an electrical circuit, thus the solenoids (2-3 to be specific). However, that should also set a P075* code. (* = I'm too lazy to look up what the actual full code is.:giggle:)

Sorry no codes have ever come up.
Only thing that seems odd is it usually occurs after a speed bump during a switch from first to second. Or sometimes on a left/right turn into alley or bumpy side street. It also occurs in stop and go traffic.
Its becoming very aggravating

So I am happy to announce that with less than 1k miles left on my extended warranty the dealer has okayed the transmission repair. As of now looks like they are doing a Torque Converter, EPC Solenoid, Pump, 3rd Clutch drum some where in the lines of a overhaul transmission. I am very glad this worked out to my favor and saved me about 2500 in parts and labor. I also get a nice 12 month 12000 mile warranty!!

I am sure now with 84k its time to invest into a independent trans cooler to avoid the dreaded engine/trans issue.

Great news.. I had my Duece back 2 times before my warranty was up and they could NOT find an intermittent problem. Sure enough a couple K out of warranty I was paying for a rebuild. GOOD FOR YOU!
