HUNNER Safari Snorkle Install

I got it from Brodie
www.RIDGEDEMON.COM
offroadtech@gmail.com

He managed to get me one in less than a week even with GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE'S BIRTHDAY IN THERE!
I got the Sy-Klone filter to mount ontop for running National Forest dirt, and gravel roads and farm land during cultivation when I am GPS mapping. I ordered mine direct after explaining the application. That was before Ridgedemon was a source.

The instructions that came with the snorkle are good, but there are some tips I have I will add later.
Be warned if you install one that it is like my old Grandpappy used to say "if your gonna build a dog house bring the whole damn tool box!" Good grief I made a mess!
Nobody mentioned it pepped things up a bit. I would say about as much as the straight intake I made.
It sounds good too if you are standing beside it, you can really hear the engine breathe. I cannot really tell any inside but then I shot too many guns, too many explosions and too many hi-pitched tools and the XM is rockin.
I will watch my mileage and the air temp. On a short test run instead of IA being about 3-4 degrees higher than the mirror outside temp when running 50-65 it was the same. I will have to watch that a little more and see if it continues to do that or that was a fluke.
It got intense on the windshied trim part and I quit taking pictures. I will explain that later.

What you see is what you get. The box says 3.7L H3 I almost freaked out! It works on the Alpha too.
Box looks like a Kanga stomped on it but inside all was good. It must me tough!

3951_resize.jpg

It comes with a nice templete but was scary close to the edge of the fender.
3954_resize.jpg

I used a 3 5/8 hole saw which is about 92mm. It calls for a 98mm. Glad I did not use that, like I would have one:cry: 3.85826772. I used my metric to SAE conversion tool (die grinder)
I used my 1/2 drill to power the hole saw. Scary power. You have to hang on cause it will not stop instantly like a battery powered drill.
3955_resize.jpg

Then you cut a little more because the snout goes in at an angle.
another tool! air saw
3957_resize.jpg

I dressed it up with the die grinder another tool
3958_resize.jpg

Then bore somemore holes in your beautiful H3! I used a black marker that shows on the edges, they are really round holes!
DAH_3961_resize.jpg

Pop rivit the new transition from the air cleaner box.
3974_resize.jpg

Then the fun part. I don't care what anybody says, your finger is the best caulk tool. You might as well go for it. I pushed it up in the overlapping seam all around outside and inside. If you don't seal this your wasting your snorkle advantage. Then of course a little overlap to make contact with the surrounding area. Shhh nobody sees this part. I guess I should have used black.
3982_resize.jpg

01134.jpg

I tied all of this into my Hunner Alpha in 2008(model R) for red air intake so everything is sealed fairly good, I made the intake for my 2006 I-5 in 2006 when there was no other available option so I had R&D already.

DAH_3902.jpg

DAH_3908_resize-1.jpg

I ended up with 1/2 inch clearance at the fan using a 3 inch pipe. More clearance for offroad and looked safer to have that margin of error.
Next was not fun. I have the right tool for those cheap GM plastic pop fasteners. However they decided to recess some really deep and you have to go digging for those. Most will explode!
Push-type rivits
remaches a presion-plasticos
or my personal favorite

I want to add some about the front cowling on the windshield. If you get this there is a picture of this removed in the instructions. I was so determined to get this done right I did not stop for pics. Now that I have done it I will add that after you apply tape and mark the holes and start to drill, you will feel that what must be several pieces of layered metal that you are drilling into. Be CAREFULL and hang on. The bit will try to squirm around as it hits different layers. I would suggest a smaller bit than you would use for the 3/16 or metric equivalant rivit to allow for accidently maybe enlarging the hole in the outer sheet metal if it gets to moving on you. It can cause the outer layer to get bigger than it should. I learned on the first one!
Next open the door. There are two philips screws under the folds of rubber. Remove these FIRST! Then there are three of those wimpy plastic tabs supposedly molded properly to the backside of the trim piece. They are not! They are barely attached. You should pull straight away from the windshield or maybe attempt to insert a screw drive next to each one to pop it loose. They are pushed into plastic slots inserted in the metal. I broke the top one and you can see it was only attached by one 1/4 inch area of the molded piece. I could not find my double sticky foam tape but I managed to insert the top in to the rail and it tightened up ok with that first insert tab missing. I will watch it and may have to fix that later if I go over Mach I!
I made a trip soon after installing to High Island Texas an quickly learned the stock 90 degree intake was really effective at ingesting water and those awful black bugs that swarm just before sunset!! I even tried it backwards for awhile.

When I called I talked to the guy whats in charge. I'm not sure yet if it hurts to mention Hunner or not! But he knows what you are talking about if you do!
The videos are great! Check them out on their web site.

Works in an Arkansas scale blizzard too! They recommend sliding the plastic screen down to keep from being clogged by snow pack. That's on the page about snowblowers equipped with one. Went with chains when all this slush froze. Got by with just the fronts.
5x4500re.jpg

It says on the box for the "Vortec 3.7"I believe the 3.7 and Alpha were the same box. They must be because I installed it on my Alpha with V8 and that application is not on the shipping box end.
I think it could be installed on an 06 I-5 3.5 with some modification to the air box intake. I posted a thread on taking the OEM snorkle fitted to the intake box off and just using a turbo boot a long, long time ago. A short piece of pipe could go into that and into the new snorkle boot. It would take a little creativity but I think they should look into that and get a whole new market of 2006 vehicles. Or I could??? But then I should get a cut, right? You just would not use their square hole to round hole adapter.

Great post Hunner, I ordered on yesterday after being taunted by the "scuba" thread.

You wouldn't happen to recall the size of the worm claps included in the kit? I would like to pick up some nice stainless steel t-bolt clamps to use in place of them.

Thanks

Yeah I was going to do that too and got all excited the night I got it and just used those. It might be in the instruction sheet. Maybe I can look that up for you unless somebody else finds it.

With the Sy-Klone you will find it also works well in really dusty conditions. I ran a new white air cleaner in Moab for a week eatin dust and it still looked fairly good. I always carry a spare, they don't work too good when soggy!

This was the day in 2006 I decided I would make one come out at the exhaust vent, but waited on ARB to come out with a nice one, so I could keep my light on that side. Long Ranch Texas, my daughter calmly said, uh Dad we have water over the front corner on my side. Someone got a shot just before we submerged.
LongRanchCreek.jpg

Even without one the H3 does fairly well, but why risk it.
I watched these guys flog it thru here then drove calmly thru it and just for grins backed thru it a second time.
All of them are long time friends but flooded ignitions and air filters stopped them all. They had to go to town to get new elements.

It's ok, the guy on the right is a Rover mechanic!
_DSC3352.jpg

Then at the Hummer Hap I was guiding these guys decided to take a detour, I shot pictures knowing the weekend before they had a backhoe in there digging!!
This is not me! I still have a little sense left.

Intake side going down!

No you cannot crawl up the bank
_DSC4781_resize.jpg

uhhh keep moving please that one with TEST on the back window was one the dealer furnished.

Then there were those that thought faster was better?

Its all right Hunner, I can just wait until I get it to measure the existing clamps. I just figured if you happen to know the size, I would get them ordered.

Like in the pictures I used the stock box. I did not seal it since I will be opening it. It would probably leak if submersed and there are some drain holes in the bottom that need to be plugged. I don't "plan" on crossing deep water but if I do I hope to keep moving and have a plastic tarp to put over the grill. As long as I keep moving and don't go too fast so the bow wave goes over the hood, I hope to be good. Again I don't plan on doing that. The BCM is also under the glove box and is subject to water at that height which would be really deep.
I either walk creeks or use a bobber on a pole to check depth and proceed with caution only if it is necessary. The cleaner air I get is the most used function.
I did notice my pop rivets have come loose there by the windshield. I don't know if someone pulled on it or just over time and rough roads they came loose. I thought they felt a bit loose when I installed them as they go thru several layers of metal. I have not hit any limbs.

Hey hunner, just a tip that worked really well for me was when drilling the fender hole i put the drill in reverse and worked really well cutting and didnt tear my arm off. Die grinder like you said worked really well for final fit. Good write up!

Can't believe I never came back and stuck this in here! lol
Video from dash cam, stock exhaust, pass side window open, sun roof open, watch for and listen at the soft spot in the beach where I floored it. That is only intake noise. Got to love a V8 bark.
