AC problem

I am getting a horrible screech/howl when my AC clutch engages. Looking at it the pulley spins still, and the noise does not sound like a belt slipping. Also noticed a strange smell inside the truck right when it happened. I turned off the AC and the noise stops, but there is still an odd sound like a loose pulley or something. Anyone had anything similar?

It was way too hot to touch or mess with anything,so I'll look at it on the morning. It was 102 and this happened half way through Moab Rim! Long hot day!

I was reading this then I got distracted when you said moab rim...your in moab!?!?
[emoji10] Yes! We are on a family road trip and this is the outer leg of it. So far I've never been able to get the time off work to come during one of the yearly gatherings. But I had this time and we decided to just do it. H3slate met us here. We ran Moab Rim yesterday in 102 degrees! It was awesome though, even without AC. Here's a teaser until we get pics all sorted out.

Well, it wasn't the tensioner, but after taking it off it definitely would have been soon. The compressor clutch is toast. I have an appointment first thing in the morning to get it changed. Hope that does it!

On the way to pick up Big Blue! They say it's working fine with the new AC clutch! Hope so, it's supposed to hit 106 today!

Next stop is camp to load up the gear and then off for Hell's.

Well, AC went out again on the way home. So now I'm sitting in Boise waiting for the whole system to be replaced. Compressor, evaporator, condenser, the whole shebang! $1058! Damn it! Supposed to be done by noon tomorrow.

And to make it better, there's some kind of soccer tournament on here so it took 30 minutes of calling about 20 motels to find one with a room! So now we have a one king room with a family of 6 in it! But at least there's a pool!

Whole system? Why?
Well, it was compressor, condenser, filters, and valves. Not the evaporator or accumulator. They think one of the filets got plugged and the system over pressurized popping off one of the valves, because there wasn't much left in the system, and the compressor was toast. Working great now and on the road home again!

Any warranty on the compressor you just put on?
Well, the first fix was just the compressor clutch, and was based on my diagnosis. That shop wasn't equipped for more than normal AC servicing. So I kinda eat that one. Ad for the new compressor and the rest on there now, 12 months 12,000 miles parts and labor.

Ahh! My bad, was assuming you replaced compressor assembly

GM dealership or independent shop? If GM, compressor might be lifetime, but have to verify that
