Alpha Envy

Here in Aus we do suffer from Alpha envy as the H3 only came here with the 3.7 I5 Motor (we were slated for a 2.9l VM Motori Diesel but GM pulled Hummer before it was released)

Caught up with Skippy this week (he gave me a H4O sticker ) and I was telling him about Woofpac putting a 6.2l V8 in a H3 for a customer.

At the time I saw it it was a mess as he was building the loom from scratch, but looks like he has got 450Hp out of it (with 315Hp at the wheels)

This was the diesel engine they were developing for our Aussie H3, Cadillac & SAAB before GM pulled the plug.

Wonder if they beefed up the tranny, axle, etc?

Not sure about the V8 but for the Diesel my contacts said it would be Auto only but the rest was ok. During testing if they saw any stress on the driveline the plan was to drop back to the 2.7l version or detune it depending how close it was.

The HSV people (GM Performance division) here did a supercharger kit for the H3 and the driveline was not modified as part of the upgrade either so it looks pretty robust.

Looks like that is an '08 or newer model. From what I recall, the 08s and newer have a firewall mod that doesn't exist in the older trucks making it harder for us older trucks to shoehorn in the V8. Just waiting for my I5 to die so MaxPF and Crawler can try this on my rig.

BFH,Plasma,grinders.........electrical engineer from what that wiring mess looks like? Wonder why you can't just use the harness out of whatever the engine was in?

Yes, Hummer in AUS was only released from October 2007 which would mean the earliest model here is an 08.

Mash Motors in Wichita is putting those into H3s.

I believe if you use the lower profile car-type intake, a Gen IV V8 will fit in the Pre-'08 H3's. And you will have to make motor mounts.

I love this...about a year ago I would just say "go out and do it!" this place taught me the causes and effect theory in the world of cars. I think the 6.2 would be INSANE (insanely awesome) for an H3. My moms denali has the 6.2 and is detuned from the factory with 403 horses, it gets up and goes even hauling around roughly an extra 1000lbs of mass. This thing would be so quick...The extra weight up front would probably help with hillclimbs, you would be able to just idle and crawl anywhere but if/when I do this I would put squeaky out of commission for about 6 months to a year and be prepared with another DD. This motor swap would probably require custom torsion bars (sway a way doesnt make them anymore) for the added weight so a higher spring rate would be needed, The rear axle can probably take the abuse, I would atleast add a CI diff if not going the custom route and doing a swap in 8.6 or higher range. I think it is VERY possible to get an H3 to ride and perform like HUMMER designed it would just take some tuning. At the end of the day I would love the 6.2 I would just want to do it right, being reliable, ride nice and upgrade some weak parts...In the end I know its possible, GM did put a 6.2 in an H3 and took it to moab, I think they never came out with it because HUMMER went under...who knows though.
