When we first got to the trail I felt the need to apologize to Frogger. Told him I was sorry the hummer would be so much smoother and more comfortable, with less bouncing and banging around than he's used to that he may not get the full wheeling experience. He did mention once or twice that he wished he was up there in his Jeep, but overall I think he had a good time. It was great having him navigate us to a new area I've never been.
It was mostly just a scenic drive, but there were a few mud holes we went through. Almost didn't make it through this one, deep sticky muck:
As is always the case, pics don't do it justice. Spun to a stop once, backed up a few feet, then made it the rest of the way at what felt like 1 mpg with the engine at 3-4k rpms. When we got through Ferron told me if he was in his Jeep he probably wouldn't have even tried it. Probably a good thing that log pile is blocking the deep part. I probably would have tried going through that and I'm pretty sure I never would have made it.
desert - if you don't already have it, you should get one of those lifetime rock chip repair cards. $40 from Technaglass, good for as long as you have your H3. Doesn't cover windshield replacement, but as you know around here multiple chips a year and a new windshield every couple years seems to be the norm.
At one point we pulled over to let a couple guys on motorcycles go by. They stopped and chatted with us a bit. They seemed quite surprised to see us where they did. Something about never seeing anything other than bikes and 4 wheelers, let alone something as big as a H3/H3t. I will say in the area we crossed paths, I was regularly scraping both sides through bushes and such. I'm sure I have some nice new racing stripes. Nothing too extreme or hard to navigate, but trees and bushes made for some tight areas. A Jeep would have been a better fit, and an H2 may have had a hard time.
On the way back it started to rain, and like the bike guys warned us it got REALLY slick. Fortunately we were almost out when the rain really hit, I was sliding down hills and the back end was a bit loose around corners. First time in mud with the duratracs so I don't know if they are meh in mud or if it's just the nasty clay like mud but I'm glad we got out when we did. Desert said he was sliding as well, and the other guys warned us it would be nasty, so I'm going to give the duratracs the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just really sticky slick mud.
Sorry I don't have more photos, I'm not much of a picture taker and like desert I forgot to bring a real digital camera.
