Anyone run radar detectors?

how many of you guys run radar detectors? i know "hummers are for speeding" but when i had mine i still ran a radar and all the cars all the way down to the hybrid we have. i recently bought a valentine 1 radar detector and damn does that thing work great! it detects cops using there radar around a mile away! i dont "speed" i drive usually 5-6 over the limit.

I have the iRadar which Has an App and which you can control with your iPhone...I used to use mine back when I was in NY, due to speedy raps and cams, as well cops over there are D's to soldiers...even if u don't do nothing wrong if they see out of state tags 90% of the time they would stop you for stupid to senseless reasons...here in Cali I don't have much used for it unless I'm on the highway going 75-85, Or Cruising In Areas I Dint know too Well And That might have speedy raps or cams...it works great haven't really used other brands, so yeah there go my 2 cents.

I have an iRadar too, but don't use it - it costs a lot to use it (MB time). I have another detector, a whistler, it works okay - but what works better is being part of Search and Rescue...

it was mounted on the top of the cb radio? remember? it was one of the those cheap cobra ones my friend had given me to use till i got the one i have now!

i have a radar as more of novelty and a gadget more than an excuse to speed, i think its the coolest little think!

They do help. Always ran one until, got pulled over in my work truck. Statetroopers frown on them here for work trucks. Darn laws. I could of had a $2000 in fines, Radar detector was a big one and 12 over was a big deal too. Let alone, no DOT #, cause I was pullin a trailer... Got lucky...and only got a speedin ticket. 2 pionts $180 cash and after he told me this...I thanked him...
I think they do help you. It also has to be the lastest an greatest.
Also, Statetroopers have rear detectors also. They know , how fast your comin up to them before you know they are there.
Besides, the way they set up around corners an hilltops. Be care an let the faster one pass you. So, you have a fightin chance...

They can help in a lot of ways. I was in a rental car in Ohio and had my radar detector. It was night and I was probably about 15 over at the time. The Statie used instant-on and had me nailed, but I slammed on the brakes anyway, figure I'm nailed but I need to slow down anyway. I ripped the radar detector off of the windshield and put it under the passenger seat.

Got pulled over and he took my license, etc. While he ran my license, a monster downpour started. He came back and stated that since I slowed down so much that I must have figured out I was speeding and that I corrected myself. I also figure he didn't want to stand in the rain any longer than he needed to, so I got off with a warning.

In the past fifteen years I've been pulled over about five times for speeding. Each time I gave them an honest answer - yes, I know I was speeding, and yes, I gave him the accurate number - and each time I got a warning. Only that one time did I have a radar detector. I'm pretty sure that treating them with respect got me further than anything else.

Before that I used to lie and say I didn't know I was speeding, or I didn't know the speed limit, etc. I got a ticket each time.

I had one in my RSX-S When I lived in Cali but not the 3. Where I live now if I get caught in a speed trap or notice a cop tailing me there are way to many back roads / dirt roads short cuts through woods n such I can vanish before they know whats going on. HAHAHAHAHHA

hahaha i was driving along a highway that is notorious for chp pull overs so i was on high alert plus had my detector running i was doing about 10 over and all of a sudden beep... beep.....beeep beep beep beep beep beep! and there was a chp sitting behind a tree! by the first beep i had already dropped down to the speed limit and go into the right lane and all of a sudden some lady in her minivan flies passed me and i just smiled! next thing i know i see those blue and reds flip on and he pulls out behind her LOL best feeling ever!

Now that I have my CDL I try to avoid driving faster than the flow of traffic. If I do its not by much. Just not worth it really. Plus I drive a H3 on 35s. If I wanna drive fast Ill take the track car to the track. But that bug is not in me anymore. I just like cruising along and hitting some back roads and mud.

Radar is outdated technology. There are many departments still utilizing radar but for the most part, Lidar has become the standard. Lasers are much more definitive and far more difficult to detect.

I think you hit both nails on the head. One, Lidar (and instant-on radar) will defeat those with radar detectors. Two, many police just use standard radar and leave it on all of the time thus making radar detectors effective in those instances when you are alerted a half mile ahead or greater.

I don't usually speed in the Hummer unless I am not paying attention and it is a school zone. H1's just don't go anywhere fast.

I drive slow in the H3 its on 315's anyway and handles pretty bad..

In the Kenworth I rely on experience and the CB radio to avoid getting caught....

In the Audi or on the motorcycles I pick my spots carefully when I decide to act up..

I've had a radar detector in every vehicle I've owned since I started driving. I've never had anything more expensive than the $125ish Cobra. They are no where near 100% effective, but I know for a fact it's saved me more than once, so it has paid for itself multiple times over already.

The Valentine One does laser/lidar now I believe. I remember they figured out how some LEO were using "detector dectectors" to find out if a driver was using one, and solved the problem by increased shielding.

I never had a speeding ticket because I'm usually driving something that can't go fast enough to get one, but It'll be nice to have one as a backup you miss the 55 -> 25 mph speed reduction in the middle of no where.

When I was young and dumb and had too much HP for my own good I would haul all over the country with an Escort 9500. San Diego to N. Idaho via Portland, OR in 17 hours, Orlando, FL to Jackson, MS in 8 hours, etc. Got pulled over only once in Panguitch, UT because I got pegged coming around a blind corner in a treed valley. But he let me off with a warning Eluded staters everywhere including hiding in a cow pasture in W. Montana til the coast was clear after getting clocked at over 150.

Now I am a bit more conservative and tend not to speed but that 9500 kept me out of a lot of trouble. There are three things that won't keep you out of trouble with a detector: Laser, Aircraft and bad judgement.
