Burnt wiring

So, I have my 3 up on my new hoist giving it a good looking over and I find the connector for the transfer case encoder wedged between the case and the exhaust pipe. Its normally attached to the transfer case by a mount clip in 2 little holes in the case. The connector is enclosed in a heat shield but part of the connector body is burnt away. I was able to get it to disconnect but 1 wire on the motor side is damaged with the plastic housing. I reinstalled it and zip tied it to the case. Everything still works but I need to see if GM offers a connector kit through a/c delco. Maybe a good time to consider ordering a new 4 to 1 transfer case. This is something you might want to check on your own rigs. It could possibly explain an occasional transfer case malfunction or a non shifting situation.

I had a ton of wiring burnt on my H3 by the exhaust. The guys that had last worked on it, had left everything hanging and it shorted in the middle of the Nevada desert. Thank god for my iPhone and OBD cable. I managed to get it running and made it back home. Checking any wiring around the exhaust is a good thing. It may even be in everyone's interest to get heat sleeves from Jegs as a secondary precaution. It's a cheap insurance policy, that is on my to do list when I get back home.

I went to my dealer today to check on availability of connector replacement componants. The harness end connector is available but nothing for the encoder motor wiring. They want to sell you a new unit for $280 retail. The good news is the same encoder motor is used on a ton of GM trucks and SUVs. The were able to cross reference the part number and gave me a printout so I could source a used one if I want. Then I got to thinking about just getting the NR6 case that comes with all the sensors and encoder motor. We called the GM parts tech line and they verified that all was included. But we then discovered that the price I was given of $1300 is for an NR6 case for a non alpha H3. My price for a complete NR6 case for my truck is $1650 plus tax. I would like to know what the difference is between the cases. Any ideas?
