Just had a shop replace both cv shafts under an extended warranty.
Now the cv shaft is popping under acceleration. What could be the issue?

Are you positive that's it's the CV popping??.... Usually they make a sound when turning.... Under acceleration popping sounds can come from bad front diff bushings

I had a similar issue few years back. Found out that there was two sizes of cv shafts. The difference is a few millametters but that was the problem for me. I have a alpha as well and from what I remember the shorter cv is the correct one.

If I recall correctly, the H3 CVs were extended a few mm in part to accommodate the Alphas and/or improve on the original design. The earlier CVs were shorter, all later ones were longer. Nightrod, not saying that you didn't find a fix, but it's a curious one.

Thanks for the replies. I've taken back to the shop. He also suspects the front diff bushings. Although it does look like the CV half shafts have to much space where they go into
the diff.

They used Carquest shafts. ncv-10244. Are these worth a sh*t?
The best direct replacement is GM, but they are pricey at around $240 each. People have had mixed luck on the aftermarket brands - good and bad - and I don't know of any anecdotal evidence either way on Carquest. As long as the CV itself is flexing properly, that's probably not the issue at the moment. I have seen a few CVs lately that just would not bend properly and that led to awkward driving. Nothing was torn or obvious to the eye but it was clear when grabbing the end of the axle and trying to flex it, and it barely moved.

FWIW, I've been running Cardones. Broke one, had one fail (stiff CV) but they've otherwise been okay.

That's what I'm getting, Cardone. There pretty cool and said they would replace both.
i have one as a back up and they will install it on the driver's side to see if that helps.

I went with a tatton for mine with the adapter from CJ. A very nice upgrade and much stronger than the original.

I just had the same issue with my rig. Replacement shaft from NAPA on the passengers side started popping under acceleration. Had a torn boot. Replaced it from O'Reilly and wheel hub. Much smoother and quieter than it has ever been.

I recently ran into this problem.... A! Cardone has a CV Axle P/N 66-1417 that is too long and the splines do not match. I discovered this AFTER pulling the old shaft! They offer a remanufactured Shaft P/N 60-1417 but I saw no reason to go that way again. I found the DTA GM2580 and got a report from someone who had previously bought them and found them to be the right size... Just waiting for them to arrive!
