DIY Cart

I could not figure out what section to post this in, but it is tech related. I started paddle boarding with my two sons and it turned out to be a great workout for balance and coordination to help them with their disabilities. They each have a rare genetic disorder which affects their ability to walk and balance well. One of the biggest problems we have it getting gear, boards, and the boys from the truck to the waters edge. So I looked online for a cart idea and could not find anything for the price I was willing to pay. So I came up with an idea that has proven to work very well for our paddle boards and may also work for other smooth bottom components needed to cart from one point to another. I wanted something simple, lightweight, easy to attach and detach and did;t like what is currently on the market, which most are well over $100 and strap to the board in some manner. We started with a 4 suction cup dent puller and two 12.5" wheels from norther tool, some 1/2" and 3/4" PVC and fittings, 1/2" bolts, etc.. and came up with the following:

I left two 3/4" PVC stubs facing forward to connect future stuff to, i.e. handle support bar, who knows, but this was a quick throw together project that turned out pretty useful. I decided to introduce a light bend in the axle to offset the tendency for the PVC to want to flex under load, may not be necessary, just something my brain told me to do.

As long as there is a relatively smooth and flat spot, these suction cups hold super strong. The total cost was around $50 or $60 in parts only because I splurged on the wheels ($15/wheel), I wanted something light that had a bearing in the hub and not just plastic. The the total weight of the cart is right at 5 pounds. This could also be put together with some locking pins to allow for easy assembly and disassembly and storage. I'll be enjoying some rays on the paddle board while you guys are wheeling it up in Moab. Have fun and be safe.

Very cool. I'd totally build another set for the front, slap some handlebars on it and head for the biggest hill I could find! ...then probably the nearest hospital.
