i installed a magnaflow on my h3 alpha and it sounds nice/low burble at idle, and when you get on it she opens up to a nice tone. hp gain is minimal 5-8 likely but sounds better lol. now if coupled with stainless headers that are less restrictive... hp gain likely would be in the 20hp range, but thats for another day and another discussion.

I think its easier to help a V8 sound throaty over an inline 5 cylinder. GM had a V6 camaro with a throaty exhaust note using a muffler with dual tips. I've long suspected that the Camaro muffler (V6) might make a good option on the H3. Not sure what performance gains are available for an I5 without beginning with a header. Once restricted with resonators or catalytic converters, I'm not sure what benefit there is to opening up the flow rate after that - except sound - and that can be accomplished by either eliminating the muffler or replacing with one having a different note.

However - if a two cylinder 1450cc engine can sound as thrroaty as Harley's do, then something akin to a 3.5L 5 cylinder must be able to sound good also - with the right materials.

Not sure of all of the designs but one benefit of the Gibson exhaust for the I5 H3 is the resonator delete, and putting the muffler in the place of the resonator. That frees up space between the rear axle and bumper for things like an air tank. Or a custom exhaust could do this too.

I was thinking about the gibson, but the only reason I don't want to go with the gibson is I don't want it to be too loud since it deletes the resonator. Does anybody have a gibson or magnaflow? how do guys like it, how loud are they?

I had a Flowmaster first and hated it. Switched it to Magnaflow and love it. My F350 had a Gibson and hated the drone it had. Went back to factory exhaust. My 69 el Camino with an LS1 engine has Magnaflow and it's perfect. I'm sold on Magnaflow.

The GM Performance exhaust has removable tips (actually sold without tips) and is made by Borla. The touring system would give you the mellow sound you are after. The system (without tips) list for $1002. I actually got mine off eBay a while back and paid 85% off list.

The GM Performance exhaust has been discontinued and Borla is having a clearance sale on them right now for $368.55. You can also buy the tips separate (3 styles available and there all embossed with the H3 logo) and can remove them before offroading (this is what I plan on doing).

Sound clips for both the Touring & Perfomance exhaust systems can be found here

There is a little more info in this thread

I had my tips powder coated matte black

The Touring exhaust system is the same as the Borla #140166 exhaust system (except it has removable tips vs welded on tips) that sell $1000

Ok thanks solar, so the top one that is one sale is the performance not the touring correct? IF I can't get the touring for cheap, I was thinking about buying the magnaflow for cheap and then cutting the tips and making them removable with clamps

The one in my link is for the Touring system, the Performance system is cheaper at $297.00
http://www.borla.com/products/product_detail.aspx?prod_sku=19154703

The cheapest tip option is $21.70ea. So if you went with the Touring system you would be looking at $411.95 and Perforamance system would be $340.40 (Magnaflow on eBay is around $475?).

Ok, so this one is the touring exhaust, and this would fit on the 3.7 correct? because I called up borla and they said its only 3.5, but I believe they all fit the same, right?
http://www.borla.com/products/product_detail.aspx?prod_sku=17802015

I can't decide between the magnaflow or borla "touring" exhaust.
Yes, that is the Touring system (has resonator and larger muffler) and it will fit all 3.5L and 3.7L H3's. The GM Acessories page for Hummer has been taken down but here is a screen shot form the page I have saved on my computer.

The GM Performance Touring system with tips is $460.13 shipped to your door and the cheapest Magnaflow I found on eBay was $474.52 shipped. So the touring exhaust is $15 cheaper and wouldn't require an modification to have removable tips. I am not telling you to buy the Borla/GM Performance system, just stating the pluses as I see them.

There is a drone on the Gibson. Not bad from the front seat but louder and more annoying from the back seat. Luckily, I'm not Ed Too Tall Jones and I can still drive from the front seat.

OK thanks! Now I just want to find the systems cheaper, the magnaflow is best offer and one of the people took 400, but I can't get an accurate sound of either system. If I am going to spend the money I want to get the best sound too, not too loud with little to no drone, but I still want a nice deep tone too. Solar, did you instal your cat back yet? or have you heard either a magnaflow or borla in person?

I actually went with the magnaflow, and I like it a lot, not to loud, but it has a deep tone, and its has a nice rumble when you get on it. I actually talked to that guy on the craigslist ad, he is a dick. If you want a magnaflow, the cheapest I found it was on amazon, but I got a deal on mine

I had that exhaust on mine and it drove me crazy at 60mph. so I went to my exhaust shop and had it removed. It was replaced with a turbo muffler up front, single in and dual out to the back with no resonator...still has the rumble at idle and is nice driving at any speed.

I am using a Billy Boat exhaust 3.5 double wall tips ( http://www.bbexhaust.com/suv/h3/ ) and the product is very good but I would like to add a powerful deep tone. My friend suggested to remove the resonator (kind of oval thing, see photo and photo part 1) and put a straight pipe. What do you think? Thanks

The picture that you put is of the catalytic convertor, the resonator is bigger and more oval. If you go from the back of your truck, it is the oval muffler looking thing after the muffler. Removing it will make it louder, but I think the billy boat cat back doesn't have a resonator, I don't know though

Ron are 100% sure? Probably when the mechanic installed the B&B he removed the factory resonator. The thing is that the oval thing that I posted before doesn't have any O2 sensors around it... Thats' why I was thinking it was the resonator. The Billy Boat doesn't have a resonator. The parts of the B&B are the following

Ron46 is correct - that is a catalytic converter. There are two cats in the H3 exhaust - one that is a part of the exhaust manifold and another further downstream towards the rear of the truck.

Perfect! Then I will remove it and I will put a straight pipe. Did you remove it as well?
