Front Diff gasket???

I need to start trouble shooting the front end of my truck. 3 weeks ago while wheeling i was having some pretty loud sounds from the front end, and its still making the sounds when i turn and on the high way. i just got my truck home, had to leave it 250 miles away due to the grinding sounds. So i stop into a few local auto stores today, no front diff gaskets in stock. 2 stores will order me one!! WTH? One store has "hummer" removed from the computer system (no tie rods, no parts, no nothing).

Can anyone tell me if there is a gasket for the front diff cover? Or am i just going to have to make one or use RTV? Just want a heads up, tomorrow is a tear down day. Yippieeeeeee

Second, I would use sealant like this...

If its the diff you may have chewed up the ring gear. Seeing it seems like it has gotten worse you may have chewed up the gear just slightly and then some of the metal shavings made matters worse over time. Who knows until you fulling get in there. hopefully nothing is too bad.

My Chevy truck is twenty-three years old and I have trouble finding common parts I need for it...and it's a Chevy! I'm wondering if the gasket you need might also fit a 4WD Colorado. Maybe that would work. I've gone to parts stores before and had clerks tell me that Camaro parts won't fit my Firebird. I know what fits and what doesn't. I just ask for Camaro parts when the need arises.

It is a permanent gasket and if it is not damaged you will not need to replace it - just use it again. I would have RTV on hand just in case but otherwise your best bet for replacement would be ordering online.

I'd second that idea. It just means you have to plan ahead a little bit. A diff gasket seems like a common part to me and if a dealer doesn't stock the part then online is the way to go. Ordering the part online will supply you with the part in the same time frame as ordering from a dealer. I give a dealer the chance to sell the part if they have it in stock because of convenience, but if not it's their loss.

Time to start an H3 Parts Cross Reference?

Hummer is beginning to disappear from the search menus on automotive sites. Perhaps it's time to begin building a parts cross reference listing for H3 parts to other GM/Isuzu models that used the same component, or the part nos. from suppliers like AC Delco and Delphi. Another car forum I frequent does this because the model covered is old and an exotic; meaning parts prices are astronomical...unless it's found on a non-exotic make or under a part mfrs number. The supplier's part (e.g. Bosch) is usually 25% the cost of the same item in a factory box. That forum began a "sticky" where members post the part nos. they find from alternate sources and its proven to be a real treasure.

Cross reference chart will help many of us in the future. Damn Florida storms have messed up my plans on working on the truck. Raining so hard on and off all day, couldn't open the garage. May try to open up the diff in a little if the storms are gone for good. Have all the stuff ready on hand to seal up the diff after i inspect it. Hope its something simple like an axle or steering part. Im not in the mood to swap the diff, and would like to be running this weekend to go wheeling.
