Gobi parts update

the only people pi$$ed off by this are 99% buying used and home builders trying to use GOBI products.
In all honesty, every time I come accross a used rack and that sale goes to the used seller or copying manufact, I loose out on the sale (or another Authorized GOBI dealer does).

I can understand GOBI's position on this however it looks to be a bit extreme. If they are worried about home built racks using GOBI parts why not have the current registered GOBI owner/seller give a bill of sale to the new owner who could then email/fax it to GOBI to verify ownership. I could even agree with a $5.00 - $10.00 Admin fee (if and when any parts are needed) to change the registered owner. However if they feel they are losing sales because of the used GOBI market then I call BS.

I was in the process of putting my spare on a Gobi stealth earlier this year one called to order a pair of additional mounting brackets for strength. They stated that it is their policy not to sell parts. I origionally bought the rack directly from them and insisted on better support. Eventually they said I'd need to speak with their engineer - but an unsuccessful game of phone tag thee relented and sent the brackets.

This policy is protecting their company's a$$ over liability issues and backing their design patents are all part of this policy. It almost sounds to me like gobi is trying to protect their dealers more than they are worried about liability. Have any figures on how many times gobi has been sued due to an issue like this and how many times they have lost and the costs involved? Honestly, in this day-and-age and our wacky tort laws, they could be sued as much for denying a part to make a rack safe.

Yes, GOBi is protecting it's dealer network.
I have no information if it has cost them money. If I did, I certainly would not share that info. ..esp. on a public forum.

After talking with BOTH owners of GOBI, parts will be provided on used racks. One owner tells me no parts, the other owner tells me case by case.

It's now worked out between the two of them. Basically prove you have a GOBI rack and you can get parts. WARRANTY is handled as it always has been. Have a bad part, send it in, and you will get it fixed or replaced. If you are not the original owner, you will have to provide the defective part and GOBi will either fix or replace that part. If you are missing a part, you will have to provide info on the rack and pay for the part(s).
The policy is in place to protect Authorized GOBI dealers and to prevent wrong use of product(s).

If you have questions, feel free to PM me.

For those that NEED parts, please PM and I'll let you know the info needed to get the parts.
I know someone needed a T Nut, someone needed a bracket, someone needed a fairing. ...still trying to get the H2 tire reinforcement bracket fabricated.

I'm happy to see this outcome.
It would have been very easy to limit replacement parts to end users. They could flag an account/address that is not an authorized dealer that has ordered more replacement parts that someone would really need ..as in 25 mount kits.

As a business owner myself I can understand a little paranoia on competition, but what was proposed was an extreme reaction. I may be a bit biased though as I'm now part of the problem by buying a used/resold rack via eBay.

LMK how that rack turns out. If you are missing a part, install Q's, etc, LMK and I'll do what I can to help.

Maybe you can help me a little. I bought a used Gobi Ranger rack for a H3 a couple months ago. A fellow H4O member picked it up for me, which I am very greatfull for. I had everything for mounting the rack, and it went on easily and looks great. Later on when I went to install the ladder I found I was missing the two brackets that mount it on the door. I talked to the person I bought it from and then did not know about the missing parts other than they thought one of the studs broke off the top bracket for the ladder when someone was removing it for them. I called Gobi and spoke with a nice sounding lady, and she said to email her a description of what I am missing or need replaiced so they can give me a quote for the cost. Sounded easy enough so I sent the email describing the parts, and even a copy of the page from the instructions highlighting the missing parts, and asked for a price for a touch-up kit. It has been about two weeks now and no reply has been recieved. I think there is a market for used racks, especially like in my case they bought it new from Bluehummer in 2008 and then took it off when the vehicle went back to the dealer after the lease was up or traded in. Why give a free rack to a dealer to take off and sell on ebay or craigs list. Maybe Tim can get the parts for me. Other than not having my ladder installed yet I am a happy Gobi owner.

I am really leaning towards a Gobi rack, yet i do a lot of mountian biking and the bike racks i have are the OEM hummer ones that mount right into the slots of the OEM cross rails. Im wondering if there is a system or an adapter so that i could mount my bikes to the GOBI rack. Thanks.

I'm not sure what mounts you have. Got a pic? I have used Yakima mounts on all of my racks. If the HUMMER one was a Yakima or Thule re-branded, we may be able to fit with little or no modifcations needed.
