Great video on how a diff works.

Cool!

I used to build differentials, 2 speed transmissions and piston "engines" out of Lego when I was a kid. To this day I am convinced that that's a big part of why I like cars and car technology so much.

What I can't get my head around is how a torque splitting device works, for example the H3 40:60 front / rear split.

I'm not quite sure why they advertise it that way because most Tcase's that allow certain amounts of power to go front or rear deal with clutches to make that happen much like you find in Suburu's and Audi's. The driven force is what changes it progressively from 40/60 to 50/50. For example if the rear's slips the power will go to the front and also the other way around. That's why you find in many other manufactures they will call it a center differential instead of a tcase which I think its more fitting based on how it works. In the H3 it seems that it's all done with gearing. When in street mode it's rolling on 1 set of gears and then in lock mode it slides over and starts rolling on a different set of gears that are a different size. That term 60/40 seems like a big difference for it to change but really it's only making a 10% adjustment both ways.
