Saw my dream Hummer H1 today! Insane is probably appropriate for this H1.

It was a 1997.5 (according to the H1 pros this is one of the best years)

It was the truck version hardtop (my dream H1 would be open top though)

It had a body lift, which IMHO is the best way to lift an H1 unless your dumping a lot of money for a suspension lift done correctly.

It had 40's!!!!

AND THE BEST PART WAS REAR STEER!!!

I got no pics as I chased this guy down in the parking lot right before work but he gave me his # and wants to go wheeling one day. I am interested to see who here has rear steer and if its a kit or a one off type thing...is it reliable? Hard to find? and all other details...

I have no first hand experience with rear steering on the H1's but I'm told the frame and rear wheel suspension components are not designed for the additional / different stresses of rear steer.

I've ridden in a rear steer H1 that happened to be Dave Breggins Blue Hummer. It feels kinda "strange" when your new to rear steer in an H1 because its so wide. This is one of my dream plans to eventually add to an H1.

I was considering the mod a few years ago but in reality the more you add the more you break. Plus, on my truck, the spot many put the new pump is taken up by an air tank and I don't want to lose any bed space (the bed is small enough already).

If my truck was only a trail truck that was trailered you bet I would love to do this. Is the strength of the frame rails different in the rear than the front? It really is a fairly simple mod being all independent suspension.

thanks for the info guys...I figured whenever you do an extreme change like rear steer its gotta add stress to something. I guess it could be done correctly if you start beefing up other stuff but at that point you probably need money that only bill gates has.

If you ask the AMG guys they will not recommend the rear steer set up.

I would love to know their specific thoughts on it -- I had heard it was the chance of failure while driving at hwy speeds? Would be super helpful on crazy trails...but spooky on the freeway. I think it would need some kind of mechanical lock-out (maybe it has one?).

here's a link to Dave's page about it with some prices/video links/pdf's:

I have seen some pictures and thought it was a cool idea but I would never do this to my truck. I really think in the long run it would hurt the value. I am happy with mine the way it is.

I'm with Ron's standpoint on this. If it was a trail only rig that's trailered on the highway, I'd consider it, then again, It adds complexity.

It's much easier to do it with the H1 than other vehicles since the front and rear suspension is mirrored, although technically speaking the upper control ups on the rear are not mirrored.
