H2 front diff leak...

Ok, my front diff is leaking, and it seems to be seeping outfrom the seam where the two halves of the diff bolt together. Now that I bought my wife a car, I am able to start a project like this without having to worry about getting it back together right away.

So, is splitting the diff something that can be done without messing up the gears? Or will the ring and pinion need to be set up when putting it back together? Having never had this type of diff apart, I am not sure what to expect. It looks pretty straight forward to get it out.

Any info?

I'll try to get a pic tomorrow. yes, it is the actual differential pumpkin for the front. It is two halves, that are split down the middle, so there is a right and left half.

I am not too familiar with the H2 axle but from what I am understanding its leaking due to a bad gasket or needs to be resealed. If that's the case its nothing too major but once others chime in and I see a pic I can be more helpful

Yeah, it is not a major problem. There is no gasket, but is sealed with a GM version of the Permatex non hardening gasket maker. What I am wondering is how the gera set is mounted inside, and if breaking it open is going to require re-setting up of the gears when reassembling. The resealing part should be easy.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I've never cracked mine open before. I have a very slow leak as well, it actually never drips, just stay wet around the seam at the bottom. My guess is you should be able to remove the gear set to reseal it with out to much trouble, since the case splits down the middle. Otherwise how do they setup up the gears, backlash, etc in the first place.. I'm curious to know the answer to this.

O ok. H3s use a gasket...so I would pick up from sealant and if you are just pulling the cover off of the pumpkin and nothing with the gears will be affected.

Just looked at the H2 diff assembly...its so different then what the H3 looks like so now I have no answer :sigh: Google search it though and quite a bit came up

Yeah, it doesn't have a cover like a normal diff. The whole houseing splits in two.
