H2 front differential questions

I'm trying not to get too excited, but I think I am going to be able to swing an ARB for my front end here pretty soon. :yippeeI need to take the diff apart to reseal it anyway, because both axle seals are seeping, and the seam of the clamshell is also seeping. The dealer did all that under warantee about two years ago, but it's doing it again and the waranty is up. So, I am thinking while I have it open, I would really like to drop an ARB in it.

How many have had the front apart themselves, and what special tools do I need to collect? My understanding is that the AAM uses adjusting nuts for setting backlash and preload? Is this correct? Do they require a special tool?

Does anyone have a service manual and possibly be willing to share the pages on the front diff?

Anyone here ever use the Chilton DIY online subscription thing? It's $24.95 for a year subscription, which doesn't seem too bad, compared to $3-400 for the GM service manuals. That could be 12-16 years worth of subscriptions!

Anyone know, if I install the ARB, and use the same gears, will I only need to adjust backlash, or will I need to mess with pinion depth also? I am thinking that it should only be backlash since the centerline of the ring gear wont be changing. Seems the only change should be side to side.

Anything else I should think of before starting into this? I'm torn on weather to change the bearings or not. There's 60,000 miles on the truck. I have no idea if they changed the bearings when they were in it a couple years ago for seals or not. I highly doubt it though, but bearings are spendy!

I would change the bearings while you are in there. I can probably get you the info you need. If I were to do it again, not sure if I would put a locker in the front. Seems any type of wheel spin when engaged snaps the right halfshaft. After I broke a halfshaft a few years back, I think I have only used it twice. And made sure the front tires were firmly planted.

I'm pretty easy on it, and not really into lots of wheel spin. That's actually part of the reason I want to do a locker. I've had more than one instance where I could have easily crawled over something nice and gently if I could have just had one front wheel climb up something.

Any info would be great!

Just for curiosity's sake, I called a local transmission gear shop to see what they would charge to install the ARB if I carried in my differential. They said if it did not need bearings then $500. That was all the motivation I needed to decide I'll learn to do it myself! They are a great shop, with a really good reputation, and I don't doubt their prices, but I can get some pretty nice tools for $500!

Hmm. Nobody here has been inside their front diff themselves? I guess I'll have to do a write up when I get this going.

$500 seems very reasonable if they are pulling the diff too. I had my gear guy do it when I regeared.
