Help.. wanting to put AC in my 92'

Hey everyone,

I was kind of curious as to what it would take and about what it would cost to put AC in my 92' HMC4 LE. If it would be too much hassle, I don't want to worry about it. I do know they made some of the 93's before they made the last of the 92's and the 93's had AC...

So would it be too much of a hassle to put the AC system from a 93' into my 92'?

Would it be harder to put the AC from a 97.5(the upgrader AC system) into my 92'? The reason I ask is because there is a guy on hummermarketplace selling the rear hvac unit, compressor and condensor...

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks guys.

I'd go with a military surplus red dot system of some sort, I've seen those complete for around $1000 here and there on military collector sites. They are the A/C systems used overseas in armored HMMWV's, it's a boxy unit that installs between the back rear seats, and has a few hoses and vents that you can zip tie along the roll bars to the front of the truck.

Other than that AM General has an official upgrade kit which is used in the 1998+ trucks. Those run around $3000 retail and a dealership usually charges for 1-2 days labor to take out the old system and install the new one. I'm suspecting you have no A/C at all so you will need a condenser , dryer and compressor and related hi and lo pressure hoses as well so that will add to the cost.

I think your best bet is to track down a recent hmmwv red dot system.

The kit has cutout templates for the aluminum body, there's even a video on you tube [am general sells a vhs tape of the instruction steps for $10-15] showing how to install the kit. The kit includes the hvac box, vaccum tubing, installed heater fan, the coolant manifold, water switch, hoses, heater core, control panel and misc odds and ends.

Heres one on the HML marketplace

It's a 24v system so you may need to do some electrical magic to get it to work on a 12v h1.

Thanks Kurt. That is definitely alot of help.

I found the Red Dot kit, there is one on ebay for sale for 1600. The only issue I have with this is trying to figure out where to mount the fan/condensor unit.

On the up armored trucks, the condensor/fan unit is mounted on the rear, where the rear window is on the wagons. I think it is too big of a unit to fit under the hood. I want it to be in a more concealed place, which is why the AM General AC kit is enticing. If I could fit it under the hood, I'd be concerned about the efficiency decreasing because of a lack of air flow. I'd say I could mount it on the radiator but then I'm blocking air across the radiator and at risk of overheating?

This is all a give and take. I went on red dot's website and they have a few commercial applications that I'm thinking I could fit and run, but I do like the idea of having something like the AM general kit that people will have knowledge about. If I go with a red dot kit, I'm going to be potentially struggling to find people with knowledge of their systems if it were to break. (i.e. the great minds of this forum that have helped me so much thus far)

My initial thought was the red dot R-1630 Heater/AC/Defroster commercial unit because it is a ductable unit... and it is relatively small so I think I could make it work and potentially fit under the dog house with some slight modifications. The rest of the components all would run off the engine and fit in the engine bay.

My other option is to go with the red dot R-2000 headliner series. But am unsure as to whether I want to modify/mount that to the roof..

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

the main problem that you will have is your dash set up. in 92-93 we used to be able to mount the factory (very primative) HVAC system. the newer kit won't fit in your Hummer. it was made for 94 - 97 Hummers. the one that we put in the 92 - 93 had hoses running all over the place to direct the air and it was cable controlled. red dot system is ok, you don't get the defrost or floor heat option but most people can live with out that.

Thanks Hummech,

I have space on the dog house to fit the new kit if thats what you mean? I'm not concerned with trying to mount it on the dash. I was planning on modifying the dog house cover to fit a double din, audio visual reciever that I can hook a back up camera to so I was going to removed the broken glove box and go ahead and start modifying. I want to get a 94'-97' dog house cover and modify it to fit my 92'.

I don't mind the defrost/floor heat option because I have that stock currently... do you have any experience with the red dot systems?

I don't know anything about them and any advice, pro's/con's would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hummech is the man, he's a AM General master Tech for 18+ years.

I think the HMMWV Red dot systems are put on the back of the Slant back carrier. Some newer HMMWV's have a panel cut out on the side of the passenger rear wheel well for the condenser. I'm not sure of the red dot systems being installed on the cooling stack, the OEM A/C setup on the later hummers have it on the cooling stack without losing that much flow to the radiator.

I was wrong about the AMG kit, I thought it could be retrofitted all the way back to 92/91.

My 92 came with factory HVAC. It works fairly well in the HMC4. As Mike said, they later modelunits don't fit in the space allowed on the 92/93 models.
