I'll make an account just to vote that up. That is SWEET!! I used to love Legos as a youngster. I still buy a kit every now and again for kicks.

I always wondered why GM and Lego never teamed up...I would've bought EVERY Hummer set made.

In fact, I almost bought this set a couple of weeks back, but it wasn't up to par (i.e. officially licensed) so I put it back. For anyone who saw "The Avengers", you will recall it was a REAL H3T in the chase scene. This "Hummer" has some styling cues, but is nothing like a real H3T.

I was browsing google for LEGO Hummer pictures and came across this page. You are talking to the builder of the model in the quote above! Check out here if you want the full story, check out Project of My Life: http://legokitteh1138.wordpress.com/

i just joined this forum and I look forward to browsing and seeing what other Hummer fans have posted and talked about! It has been my favorite vehicle my entire life. :)

Welcome to the forum and great job on the Lego project! You do realize that if you don't have a HUMMER, you will?!!
Most of the guys on the forum have a seat open for trail runs when you get to feeling froggy----feel free to jump in any time.

Very, very cool!

I used to be a complete LEGO nerd when I was a kid, this seems to have been rekindled since my girlfriend got me a LEGO Unimog for Christmas. I need to find a good source of specific LEGO parts so I can start building better suspensions, transmissions, etc.

Well I'm dated again. We only had Erector sets when I was a kid. Real metal nuts and bolts you could swallow and metal beams that could cut you. You could however supplement your building projects by getting parts from the hardware store.
Here is a complete Hummer kit. lol

bricklink.com man. Best LEGO part site ever. Don't ask how much I have bought from that place. Btw, feel free to PM if you need any tips on LEGO building. I'm 23 and I have never stopped being a LEGO nerd :D

I recently watched a documentary film called love of the brick, about adult fans of Lego (AFOL). As someone with a background in engineering I liked playing with Lego with my daughter as she was growing up. I enjoy buildings to vehicles, but I am never at a loss or amazement what people will build with Lego. I still have a few technic models sitting on shelves. I remember years ago going to FAO Schwartz in NYC where they had a life size display of the bridge of the star ship enterprise made entirely from Lego. It was really something.

There was a tv show on bbc America last year starring James May of top gear fame called James May's toy stories. In one episode they built an entire, full size house out of Lego. It was pretty neat. It all worked in the end.

The Unimog is slowly taking shape. Today I finished the chassis and managed to also figure out the pneumatics and power take-off's. The motor can apparently only drive the air compressor OR the power take-off's but not both at the same time.

I read about someone who modded the model by changing the gear ratio in the geared hubs from 1:1 to something like 1:3. I'll need to do the same if I want to add actual motor drive to the model as it is a heavy beast by now. I'll also need to change the geometry of the rack & pinion steering. As it sits now, there is far too much torque going in to the rack if a single front wheel meets an obstacle, resulting in the front end flexing in a way it's not supposed to.

Yeah, the unimog is interesting in its design. A problem that many big time LEGO sets is that for truly great functionality, you need to sacrifice realism. Check out brickshelf.com and search unimog. It'll show you some incredible mods of the set, as well as MOCs of the vehicle. You have to sacrifice realism to some degree to preserve function because of size. You couldn't fit all the functions of a real Unimog, let alone a Hummer H1, into a vehicle that size. Can fit a lot, just not all of it. Especially when you need to hit a price point that won't kill the budget ($200 riiiight...) and won't frustrate younger builders. If anything, for adults with knowledge about engineering and cars and the like, sets like the unimog scream for personal touches and better builds. I'll be honest, I haven't built a technic set in prolly 9 years without making it better or what I wanted. I look forward to seeing your improvements!

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=489182 for some good ideas for a light weight vehicle.
