Yes, it is closed to anyone at this time. They are trying to clean up the mess. Notice the article fails to mention that there were families up there who hiked to see the arch and quite a few young kids saw the splat!
Comes down to simple math, from arch to rock is x-number of feet; make sure your rope is a lot shorter. Longer rope not a good idea.

That's what happens when you go with people that have no clue what they're doing. "Hey guys, I got rope and a harness from REI, let's do this!" Unfortunately, it happens a lot with normal climbing too, but they get lucky. I've seen some nasty rigs.

Not only should your rope be shorter than the distance to the ground but a good 30%+ shorter because ropes stretch a lot. Then you should send a loaded backpack as a first swing. Then send the guy that built it second.

Actually, from the meeting we had this AM, the people were experienced. Like they say, **** happens.

I doubt that... Experienced people plan for when the **** happens... Others just think they "know" what to do.

I used to climb when I was a kid and the club, that I was in, did not had any major accident for more then 50 years, since it was founded. And we would spend about 3 month out of the year hiking and climbing.

That is what I was thinking. Then again, I've met lots of climbers who have been doing it for years and are therefore considered experience, but still have no clue what they're doing when they're rigging.

Most of the people on the road consider them self as "experienced" drivers and most of them don't know what a hell they are doing.

I think one year we should set one up for Black Sheep Week. If other like-minded people (new rope, properly protected, tested, etc) are involved I wouldn't hesitate to jump.

Really, did you talk to the remaining four in the group? The LEs who interviewed them did, and per what they said, they were all experienced. I have to go on that; not what is based on beliefs of those thousands of miles away, or news articles that cannot even get the land ownership correct.

No, I did not talk to anyone... And, I'm not stating that you are wrong... and, I'm not stating that I'm and experienced person to make claims...
All what I'm saying that it is not correct to call a group of (I would assume young 20's) kids are experienced. Especially after one of them died due to a negligence(and that is all what it is)... You can brake a finger because it got stack and you can say "S**t happens", But not in this case...
What will they tell to the kids parents??? ..."We are experienced to jump of the cliff without enough testing and safety precautions, but hey, S**t happens"...
