My new ride

Well, actually I got it the day before we left for Moab in June. Rode her home and parked her in the shop and left for two weeks! Figured I'd finally post her up here.

I've always wanted a straight up super sport bike, but I'm old enough now to think things through before leaping. My wife likes to ride along, and I enjoy full day+ rides. Reality is a pure sport bike sucks for this. Terrible for two up riding, and miserable for long rides. So, I started researching. I ended up deciding on a 3rd gen Yamaha FJR1300 sport touring bike. Plenty of room for two up riding, and plenty of power and performance for me when I want it.

3rd gen came out in 2013. They fixed some air flow issues , updated the front end styling and instrumentation, and added to and improved the electronics.

Started looking this summer and ended up with a brand new 2014 with one mile on it. I got a smoking deal on it because the dealer scratched one of the side bags on it in their elevator, so they marked it way down.

The bike has two side bags, power windscreen, cruise control, ABS, traction control, heated grips, 12v outlet in the glove box. It has a screen where you can toggle between three customizable displays where you can see anything from engine temp to outdoor temp, avg and instant mpg, fuel range, two trip meters, hour meter, etc.

Oh yeah, and 145 hp and 102 lb ft of tq!

Great bike. You will love how a sport touring bike takes care of the rider on those less than perfect riding days, especially in the Pacific North West. A comfortable rider is a faster rider. Luggage that works and keeps things dry is a big step up over a sport bike too.

I rented an earlier gen version of this bike in Denver one time I was in town for a conference, and burning up those mountains and canyons for a few days still stands out as one of my favourite sport touring memories. I also owned a couple of BMWs sport touring models, also amazing bikes. For those that like to get out of town, seek the twisties and ride all day in almost any weather, sport tourers are the best.

Thanks all! After doing a ton of research I really think you can't beat this bike for what you get. The power is so smooth and linear is really deceiving. And it is unbelievably stable at high speed. I've heard that at 145 it's rock steady and feels like it would keep pulling into the 160s without breaking a sweat. Perhaps one day I'll experience that myself. [emoji41]

A couple weeks ago I had the chance to swap bikes with a 2014 CBR1000. I rode it in the full race mode setting and it was just crazy fast. But very very uncomfortable and lots of vibration. It really made me happy with my choice. The other guy was amazed at how comfortable my bike was, how fast it was, and easily and confidently it lays into corners.
