Need to Fix My Starter!

Hunner, I think the side terminal batteries are the original layout for the H1?
I was just commenting and referencing the H3 as an example of the top terminals. Sorry I got off into the H3 stuff, but the starter situation is pretty much universal about ground and good cable ends and solenoids.
I never liked those crazy side terminals. You would think in a battlefield situation being able to jump another H1 would be important. Even the side terminal clamps on jumpers are sort of flemzy.
I got heavy duty top terminals for my Cummins with dual batteries, just have not had time to swedge them but I got it mocked up with some of those crappy temporary's because the stock ones gave out and broke. It has lots of compression to spin up. It got water up to the starter during a hurricane and a month later the starter contacts gave up. Title surge was higher than forecast. They make some for 24 volt starters that will fit in the 12v on the Cummins. That might be something to look into at a shop that rebuilds big starters. I use them for big diesels on trawlers.
Great thing about the Exides you can lay them down to mount them. I have installed several that way that are still working fine.
I'll leave you to your H1 discussions.
Happy New Year

David, I wonder if Mike now knows about Joe's? When mine took a dump in Feb I think the turn around and price for the local place was insane...that's when you came to the rescue. Now that I think about it...I have to call Mike tuesday (I forgot he still has my starter)

Joe's has rebuilt numerous starters for Mike and I for the H1s. $90.00 was the highest price I have paid. They rebuild 50+ a month for Ft Hood so they stock all the parts.

First off... HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!
That's not bad at all! Parts on hand is also great. It's about a 4 hour trip for me. Not too bad at all. I have that info saved on my laptop for future use.
Thanks for the info!

UPDATE...
Just had the neighbor over to crawl under the H1 to look at the starter. We found two wires very loose (a full turn or more). One wire to the soleniod and the other was the main positive to the starter. There was a bunch of goo around the main positive terminal. I think it was to keep corrosion off the terminal. Thought we had it then. It cranked 10 times in a row! It even sounded better. Hard to explain but it sounded like the starter had more power. Say down and had a few beers. The man knows his engines. He told me all about the history of this engine and all of the problems there is with it. He knows Cummings, CAT, etc. He is good! Said Thanks and gave him a hearty handshake and he headed back to his truck. I told him I was going to start it one more time just to hear it again. IT CLICKED and CLICKED AGAIN!!! DAMN! He told me as soon as I get the parts, we will re-build it in his shop. I figure Thursday or Friday. I really beleived we had it. Oh well, live and learn. It felt good for a hour or so. :)

Another update.
After finding loose connections, dry cells in the batteries, replacing batteries, I decided to go out and buy a aftermarket starter. I will take out the bad one and rebuild it as a spare. I heard the starter clicking is most likely the contact in the solenoid. I bought parts:
5929757 - Kit, Core Contact
5929755 - Kit, Gasket Switch
From BluHum to fix my starter. I hear now that if you hear one click only when turning the key, and not a click, click, click, then it's most likely the brushes. Do they make a brushes repair kit? What part number would that be? Or possibly just send it to Joe's Starters to get it rebuilt. The install of the new aftermarket starter will get me on the road quicker I think.
We ran out of light today so it will have to wait until after work tomorrow. I moved it over to the neighbor's barn to work on it there. It's a bunch warmer there!
It looks like I found a lot of problems that won't bite me in the buttox later.
