I think my favorite t case is the np242.

2wd
4hi unlocked like the H3 and H2.
4hi locked
Neutral
4lo locked

I like this because if you break something in the front you can put it in 2wheel but I am a fan of 4hi unlocked because last winter on a snow run my brother and I went on the ride up he kept having to stop and go from 2 to 4 then back to 2. We would hit a patch of snow and couldn't make it in 2 wheel then he would put it in 4hi then the road was dry and would start binding so back to 2. With 4hi unlocked I love it for rain and snow. Drive without constantly stopping.

If you want 2wheel with our case pull the driveline and put it in 4hi locked

I'm pretty sure the NP242 is always 4x4 since that's what is in the H1's. No option for 4x2.

There is the 242, 242HD and 242AMG. 242/ 242HD have all options. 242AMG only has all wheel drive, 4hi locked, 4low. You can swap parts with the 242HD and 242AMG to let the H1 have all options

Granted my knowledge about the 242 is limited but I don't think it is in any way similar to the Borg Warner TC in the H3. The BW TC is controlled electronically while the 242 is all mechanical

True but... not completely impossible. Wish I had one to tinker with but there may still be "electronics" that tell what position you are in. If there is than it may be possible to build a module that sends out the right signal to the TCCM so that everything stays happy. You would have to decide if you wanted 2wd to be read the same as "allwheel drive" or 4Hi locked though as the tccm does not recognize that position obviously. Would be easier on a H2 vs an H3. Now to do an H3 I believe you could use a 241 case with 242HD internals and have a passengerside drop. I think there might be a difference in bearing size between the two though.

I looked at 242s for sale, it doesn't look like there is one for L80, there is one for L60/E. I will do some switches to trick computer into thinking: 2wd=4 unlocked, 4hi=4hi locked, 4low=4low.

I was mistaken thinking i can do 2FWD with Atlas, Looks like it has "safety" build in, you can't shift into FWD without engaging RWD first and no 4lo without RWD too.
This sucks.

So whats wrong with a pass-drop NP-205? I think these are readily available. Maybe cast iron? Maybe gear-driven? I got a guy in my neighborhood that does twin-stick conversions on them. Seems like this would bolt-up to the H3 tranny okay. Chop some holes in the floor...done! It would give you the traditional 2HI/4HI/4LO arrangement but, with separate front or rear output engagement. You can probably get a 4:1 kit for it, too. I already got lock-outs on the front axle for 2WD, so that's not an issue.

I'm completely "DUH" on t-case work but, it seems like you could just swap the t-case out...un-bolt the encoder motor...and zip-tie it to the crossmember. That way you could push the buttons on the dash to your hearts content...but they would do nothing to change the t-case mode, (no longer mechanically attached to anything). But by leaving the encoder plugged-in under the truck...it might fake the puter into thinking all is well (no warning lights). I assume you would want to set it to 4HI-lock mode via the dash buttons to defeat any F-to-R bias signal that would be present on 4HI-Street mode. Once you're there...you would actually control the t-case via the manual sticks....the way God meant it to be.

Sounds crazy...it might be...just thinking aloud. Not sure if there are any other wires or sensors on the stock t-case.

The VSS is in the t case correct?

When I swapped it to the 4:1 I think it has the VSS wire.

In terms of strength most say gear driven is the way to go.

In terms of quietness and drag throughout the drivetrain chain driven is better. More quiet and less drag.

I think the biggest problem is the VSS
