After reading the replies I'm interested in how a criminal knows your vehicle is the one that has had it disabled? Spending hundreds and more than likely thousands on a system that locks out the owner holding the key should be criminal. Mine did it in a bad neighborhood dropping off a coworker. Not only to the relearn not work the battery went dead from trying all these procedures that work for some folks on here but not me. Once battery went dead it would not release the key. So I had to leave it, with key, in the hood. Luckily, nobody can start these things even with the key so I only lost my rims! My 08 H3 has been sitting for months with no ability to put more money in it that just "may" fix it. So if pcmofnc, can disable it I'm all about it!

if you dont mind me asking but, what city were you in when your h3 had the rims stolen?

Many of GM's electronics (Onstar and Passkey) have nothing at all to do with vehicle security or passenger safety.

Another crazy conspiracy theory...

The night before we invaded Iraq in the 90s, the US hacked the Iraqi defense system. When you see the films of that first night, its very clear that they were shooting blindly into the sky. It wasn't due to our stealthy aircraft...it was because we had totally disabled and scrambled all their software earlier in the day. Anything with a computer was going haywire or completely shut-down...trains, power, water, traffic lights, etc. Because of this alarming success...Uncle Sam starting thinking ahead about future situations, and how to combat and control things like transportation. More specifically...private transportation. Not long after...Onstar was born.

Granted...some electronic gadgets are on your car for safety. But some have no use whatsoever...except to track and disable. Such is the case with Onstar and Passkey. Perhaps the biggest hurdle the government had with this new system is: How do you sell such a system to the American public? With warm & fuzzy commercials of course!...touting the benefits of air-bag sensing, and a nice friendly voice coming through your speakers..."Are you okay?". PA - LEASE! I can promise you...nobody gives a damn if you are okay after hitting a tree! These devices are built into your vehicle so that in the event of a national (or international) "situation"...the entire private transportation system can be disabled from outer space. It works so well...that the US government mandated all vehicles to have such devices. They saw the future coming and the system is already in place. By the year 2025, every vehicle on the road will have been made during the Onstar era, and we will no longer be chasing a caravan of insurgents across the desert. Instead...we just shut them off. In fact...we can shut off an entire region...anywhere in the world...with one mouse click.

And yes. A drone can locate and target an individual vehicle...sense its Onstar ID#...and shut it down from space. It is frequently used and tested during Amber-Alert pursuits on America's interstate system. Its pretty cool technology, and I personally don't care if its on my car or not. But don't think for one second these gadgets are here for your safety. Trust me. Its big brother. Its already there. Nothing you can do about it. Get over it.

Shhhh....(But why is there a microphone in your vehicle?) Jus sayin.

An acquaintance of mine worked for Hughes Electronics Satellite Div in the '80s when GM bought them. He told me that in their first meetings with the GM people, they wanted to know what it would take to develop a system that would let GMAC remotely disable deadbeat's cars. Thus OnStar was conceived.
